The InfoFilter Top 10 Torrents List: Proof That Somebody, Somewhere, Still Wants To Visit "Sam's Town"

We realize we've been a bit Torrent-topsy-turvy this week, but here's another of our semi-regular looks at InfoFilter's Top 50 Torrents List, which ranks some of the most actively traded files on the Internet. We were a bit surprised to see the Killers place so high on the list, since the album is only at No. 75 on the Billboard album charts; must be the off-key warblings of that "Read My Mind" single. As for Tokio Hotel, all we know is that it's a pop band from Germany, and that the group's YouTube videos have prompted several intellectually reasoned "gay or not gay?" debates (we also know that technically, these guys should be in the No. 2 slot, as all of the new Linkin Park files we've heard have been fakes).

  • I actually kinda like "Read My Mind" - other than "When You Were Young," it's the only song on that godforsaken album worth a damn. For the second single, they should've skipped "Bones" (oy, how cheesy that was!) and gone straight to "Read," IMHO.

  • @dennisobell: The single would be great without Flowers--there are moments when his voice goes so out of whack, it's as if he just so a mildly scary ghost. Bring back the AutoTune, please!

  • "so" = "saw"

  • "Gay or not gay?" For me the question has always been "girl or boy?"

I say "always" because they're are a permanent fixture on the German music TV channels I get. Alas.

  • Just playing devil's advocate here (and by "devil", I mean "the RIAA" - they're pretty much interchangeable), but could the Killers' high Torrent activity and low album sales be two sides of the same coin? It could very well be the case that one download of "Sam's Town" equals one less legal purchase, and these numbers reflect that. Especially since the Killers are the sort of flash-in-the-pan band that doesn't engender deep, abiding loyalty in their fan base. If I was a 14-year-old kid or a 21-year old frat boy who loved "Hot Fuss" and I discovered I could get the new album for free, I definitely wouldn't go buy the CD as well just to show my support.

Don't get me wrong, I fully support the interwebs and all their powers. I'm just sayin...

  • "Snow Patrol - Discography"

Possibly the funniest, and saddest, three words I've read all day.

  • I was just in Berlin, and upon laughing at their video, I was told that Tokio Hotel were the biggest selling German band in Germany ever. Like, more than the Scorpions. Or Nena. Speaking of which, I also saw a weird Nena video that felt way more Cinemax than MTV. Ah, Europe.

  • Tokio Hotel's been pretty heavily covered by LJ gossip bloggers Oh No They Didn't. After watching a few videos and both laughing and crying, I decided that the best way to describe these guys is a cross between Gakt and Linkin Part. (Gackt, for those of you fortunate enough to avoid J-Rock, has been dressing like Bill for over a decade.) Oh, and they'll be releasing an english version of "Room 44" this summer.

But hey, at least they're not Denmark's Nik and Jay -- I'm not sure if fake R&B could get any whiter.
