There's a rumor going around this morning that the iPhone—the Apple-crafted iPod/phone hybrid that will allegedly change the world in ways that haven't been seen since March 6—will be released on June 11. But that date, which was allegedly confirmed by a Cingular customer service manager, smells fishy to our gadget-laden siblings at Gizmodo:
June 11th is a Monday, and Apple maniacs know that The Company only releases stuff on Tuesday. Even if Cingular is doing the distribution, it makes as much sense as any that the phone will be released according to Cult Tradition. Which doesn't change until Steve Jobs says it changes.
The better bet is the Tuesday of WWDC, which is the 12th.
That's only 74 days, people! Too bad this thing doesn't have a prayer of leaking (at least, not for another six weeks or so), or we'd already be wading in enough completely speculative, yet rhapsodic posts to warrant a very special Track Marks.

I heard that the ipod function will only pay songs bought off of itunes, so you wont be able to upload any of your own music. Might be a deal breaker for normal, none fan boys.
But what about all those people on MySpace who have already gotten iPhones for free—where'd they get theirs from?
Those clown fish are the deal breaker. They don't jive with my edgy, urban aesthetic one bit.
I'm going to watch the rush for these with interest...and then wait for the second generation which fixes all the bugs and offers better features at a cheaper price.
I appear to be the only person on the planet that just doesn't like it. I hate the lack of actual keys, it's far too big, and if you can only put your iTunes purchases on it, well, screw that.
@wondergoodtx: That's not what I heard. It syncs to iTunes like any other iPod product.
The iPhone only has about as much capacity as a nano. So obviously if you're walking around with 80 gigs of ripped music on your full-size iPod, you won't be able to get all that into an iPhone. But the iPhone will be able to read the usual array of music formats, iTunes-purchased or otherwise.
I just talked to my friend who is a Cingular corporate rep -- he says June 7th. It's a Thursday, but he's enough of a phone maniac that he's probably right.
