One of our favorite stat-twists from this year's Jackin' Pop Poll was what Michaelangelo Matos dubbed The Enthusiasm Top 40, which breaks down, mathematically, which upper-echelon records had the most passion fueling their chart placement:
The Enthusiasm Top 40 arranges the Jackin' Pop albums that received more than 150 combined points by the level of enthusiasm they generated among the voters. Total points were divided by number of voters. The mean number of points per album was 10; 10.5 or above indicated high enthusiasm.
How does it shake out? Well, let's just say that there's only one holdover between the traditional critics' top-10 list and that in the Enthusiasm Top 40's—and the Enthusiasm list's No. 1 is the traditional list's No. 49. I love this stuff. At my college magazine back in the day, we used to break ties on our year-end lists based on how many lists it appeared on, but in retropect we should've done the opposite - if it appeared on fewer lists it meant those voters really, really loved it. Ah, well.
