It's getting mighty crowded in those British drug-rehab centers (or "snorty-loos," as they're called in the U.K.): Early this morning, Keane announced that lead singer Tom Chaplin had entered a facility to "deal with an increasing problem with drink and drugs," causing the band to postpone a bunch of upcoming U.S. shows. This comes just a few days after both the Darkness' hard-partying Justin Hawkins and opiate magnate Pete Doherty were admitted to England's famed Priory clinic, where they will collaborate on the worst song of all time.
This can't be good news for Interscope, who had been positioning Keane as a breakthrough modern-rock act (even though their Air Supply-lite sound is neither modern nor rocking). The band's recent Under the Iron Sea is already trolling the bottom of the Top 100, and the missed U.S. dates aren't going to help Keane's momentum here in the states. For the sake of his career, let's hope Chaplin can clean up quick, get out early, and get back to dulling what he dulls best.
