Kelly Clarkson might have another chance to call December hers next month, when she releases her new single "My Life Would Suck Without You." At least, that's what Swedish pop svengali Dr. Luke—who co-produced the track with Max Martin—is claiming, although he's also hedging his bets and saying the single could be delayed until early 2009. [Hollywood Insider]

A tipster has written in to let us know that Kelly Clarkson's album is not, in fact, coming out before the end of 2008, as we speculated in our Friday post about the fourth quarter's release schedule. Here is a space for you (and me) to commiserate over that fact.

"American Idol" Hopefuls To Be Judged By Former Dave Stewart Collaborator

Alas, I'm not talking about Annie Lennox. In an effort to bring what a Fox exec calls more "girl power" to the show, the judges' table for the next season of American Idol will now have a Coke cup for songwriter Kara DioGuardi, who's shared writing credits on songs including Christina Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man" and Kelly Clarkson's "Walk Away" and collaborated with Stewart on the pseudo-retro project Platinum Weird. DioGuardi, who Idol head honcho Simon Fuller called "a smart, sassy lady," is being billed as the show's fourth judge, which I guess means either that the judges' table will be widened or Paula Abdul will get some time off to "rest" now and again. (One producer claims that Idol was always supposed to have four judges, although it seems strange to me that it took the executives this long to find someone who wanted the gig.) A few highlights of DioGuardi's career after the jump. More »

Get It While It's Still Streaming They were scoured from Pretty Much Amazing almost as soon as they were posted, but four leaked Kelly Clarkson demos from her forthcoming, much-more-country-tinged album are still lurking in the bowels of the Hype Machine. Get clicking quickly—particularly on the link that takes you to the pretty "Close Your Eyes," which perhaps unsurprisingly recalls "Dust In The Wind"—because I suspect they won't be around for long! Kelly Clarkson's Road To Redemption Continues With Stop In Front Of The Pope

It's not reciting the words to "How Will I Know" 20 times and "I Will Always Love You" 30 times, but Kelly Clarkson is going to perform a penance of sorts later this month, when she'll perform what could be seen as the ultimate diva jam: Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria," which she'll perform for Pope Benedict XVI before he gives a speech in Yonkers, N.Y., on April 19. She's calling this opportunity a "blessing," even though she's Baptist and the oh-so-conservative Benny 16 will probably be thinking that she's a fake Christian during her entire performance. More »

Slash Finally Realizes Weiland Is Velvet Revolver's Weakest Link

Slash promises that Velvet Revolver will record a third album, with or (please please please) without Weiland. "We don't know how or when but the core four guys will continue," he was quoted as saying. It's a heartwarming response to the bitchfits his estranged compatriot has been issuing to the world, as there's no reason The Band Formerly Known As Guns N' Roses should back a grating, obnoxious hack who can't get his pipes around anything on Appetite For Destruction except "It's So Easy," making him more of a rock dodo than a rock dinosaur. But now that The Big Empty might be out of the picture, which grating, obnoxious hack (with more vocal range) should replace him? More »

Once Again, Clive Davis Learns the Wrong Lesson From the Kelly Clarkson Affair

Because apparently the Beatles took music in the wrong direction, Clive Davis says that singers should not write their own songs.

Davis, chairman and chief executive officer of the BMG Label Group, said he has seen many entertainers lose their careers by not concentrating on finding hit songs — no matter who they are written by..."I don't care how many No. 1's you have written in the past, have you written a new No. 1?" When [Whitney] Houston came to him after her second or third album and asked if she should start writing songs, he said: "Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra didn't write, and they are among Time magazine's greatest artists of the century."

Let's break down the numerous ways Davis is wrong, shall we?

Kelly Clarkson Fans Fight Clive Davis With Rudimentary Understanding Of Editing Software

In light of what they see as Clive Davis's neglect toward the promotion of Kelly Clarkson's My December, the Kelly Clarkson Express—a group that sounds like it should serve as a dual-purpose fan club for the first American Idol and trains—has put together a video for the song "How I Feel," which its members think should be the next single. This is but one facet of the How I Feel Project, a campaign to get the song played on the radio, or maybe very quietly in the background of an MTV show. While strong fan support is essential when you're a pop star being ignored by one of the world's most powerful music bigwigs, that devotion can come with a price—and in this case, that price is a well-intentioned but sadly incompetent tribute video. Kelly Clarkson Invited To Be Back On Clive Davis' Good Side

Kelly Clarkson didn't have the best 2007, and a large part of that was because of her very public tussle with record label honcho Clive Davis over the artistic direction she took on her most recent album, My December. Since that tumult—which culminated in her tour being canceled and only one single being released from the album—she's been taken under Reba McEntire's wing and played some intimate shows in theaters. And Davis has taken notice, waving an olive branch in the form of his glittery invite to his annual pre-Grammys dinner party in Clarkson's direction. Since our invitation apparently got lost in the mail, Roger Friedman's breathless description follows: More »

Some behind-the-gold-and-platinum numbers from Ken Barnes' RIAA reality check: The Jonas Brothers, despite seeming damn nigh inescapable, have only just gone platinum with their latest full-length—and they haven't even hit the million-sold mark yet; Kelly Clarkson's My December also got a platinum plaque despite being about 250,000 copies short of the million-sold mark; and someone greased enough palms to get James Blunt a gold record for his latest album, even though it's sold 352,000 copies. (Although that number seems very, very high to me, given the loud thud of indifference that greeted the album's release a few months back.) [Listen Up]

The New Kelly Clarkson Video: The Overgrown Foliage Is A Metaphor, You See

My ears pricked up toward the end—from "Since You Been Gone" to "Walk Away," the woman knows how to work over a tight bridge—but mostly the MOR snooze of "Don't Waste Your Time" is a pretty obvious excuse to create Kelly's ornate summer-job-at-the-Ren-Faire/dark-fantasy-novel-about-unicorns-and-princesses daydreams on screen, with the living creeper vines and corny CGI castles and flowling black and red goth dresses and the Sleeping Beauty canopy bed and the candelabras, and whatnot. Our "pals" at Stereogum compare it to Evanescence like that's a bad thing, making me wish the song was actually, you know, better so I could get all protective/defensive over KC rather than just wishing her rock was a little less rote here.

Kelly Clarkson's Bad Year Gets A Bit Of Spam Thrown On It A tipster forwarded us an e-mail that he'd fished out of his junk-mail folder this morning, and it made us sad for reasons that will become pretty obvious:

Kelly Clarkson's new-look tour, so far: One night at a casino, two nights at New York City's decidedly-not-arena-sized Beacon Theatre. Jordin Sparks take heed: The long road back into Clive Davis' good graces is pockmarked with "manageable"-sized venues. [kellyclarkson.com]
