If you believe the story on his MySpace page, Clutchy Hopkins is the son of a Motown engineer who studied with monks, fought with Nigerian revolutionaries, and recorded in a cave before disappearing into the desert. More likely than not, some semi-prominent musician threw this together on his four-track and thought it would be amusing to release it with a bizarre backstory. Either way, the track-name-less disc ends up mixing MF Doom-like hip hop instrumentals with India-influenced guitar tracks and some smoother downtempo work that might fool Portishead fans. Pick it up before someone reveals that it was DJ Shadow all along, and copies are selling for $250 on eBay.

Last week, I placed an order for the Clutchy Hopkins CD. I figured $5 wasn't too much to drop. Imagine my surprise when a package showed up at my desk....well, not so much a "package" as two pieces of cardboard taped together with a couple paper CD sleeves jammed inside and hand-addressed by a red Sharpie.
Imagine my even GREATER surprise when, in addition to the 12-track no-song-title CD, there was a 6-track disc of Clutchy's collaborations with MF Doom. On the sleeve cover, the two of them (in hand-drawn b&w cartoon form) sit side-by-side, a stack of LPs and a turntable between them. On the back of the sleeve is the text:
"For promotional use only not for sale
All instruments played by Clutchy Hopkins
And the Misled Children
All lyrics written by MF Doom
Remixed by Rick Rok
More instrumentals available at www.misledchildren.com"
Not sure what to make of all this...but Doom's rhymes are killer and Clutchy's beats are excellent. I recommend you get yourself a copy today.
You can only completely find yourself when you find yourself truly lost. The Life of Clutchy Hopkins is only the first of many works to come from this ever-changing legend that has become known as CLUTCHY HOPKINS. We hope you don't sleep on this groundbreaking movement that may just revolutionize the way the world percieves the evolution of funk. We've been somewhat intrigued by the whole Clutchy Hopkins mini-investigation that's been going on over at Idolator for the past couple of weeks (see their posts here, here, and here).
