Madonna May Not Have True-Blue Guitar Skills

A new Live Earth nontroversy controversy emerges: Did Madonna really play guitar during her Live Earth set on Saturday, or was she merely miming her parts? While her stock-still awkwardness as she tried playing the guitar instead of dancing seemed all too real (hey, we've seen Shanghai Surprise, so we know about her acting skills), there's debate over whether or not she actually played—and a lot of the debate is hinging on the quality of her fingernails, which some Internet sleuths are saying were "too long" for six-stringing. Maybe that key detail is why she forced all members of the media who were granted an interview to stare into her eyes as they spoke.

London Airport Security Causes Metallica To Seem Edgiest They Have In Years

Aw, come now. Does this man look like a terrorist to you? (We said "look," so citing St. Anger in your reply is an automatic DQ.)

Fred Mascherino of Taking Back Sunday's Live Earth bona fides: He recently purchased a VW Rabbit that runs on used vegetable oil. Now, if we can create a vehicle that runs off how depressing the Pussycat Dolls are, we might be able to solve this whole "climate crisis" thing right here and now. [The Color Fred]

Madonna Tries "Patron Of Gypsies" Persona On For A Night

When it was rumored that members of Gogol Bordello would be appearing with Madonna to close out Live Earth's London show, you could hear the rustling from music-critic heads being scratched. How would noted style appropriator Madonna incorporate the raucous Gypsy and punk influences of Gogol Bordello into her act? Was she confused and under the impression that the band were, in fact, an actual bordello? After suffering through the new Kabbalah hymn composed for the occasion and a screeching rendition of "Ray of Light", frontman Eugene Hutz and violinist Sergey Ryabtsev hit the stage. Opinions on the resulting performance of Madonna's classic cry of love to some guy named Pedro, "La Isla Bonita," were mixed, even among today's Idolator staff: More »

Blogger In A (Press) Bubble: Idolator Lays Its Hands On Live Earth

The Live Earth powers that be decided to offer Idolator a press pass to Saturday's event at Giants Stadium, and, armed with some extra-strength sunscreen and a round-trip bus pass to New Jersey, I headed out to the wilds of the Meadowlands. The pass gave me access to the "press bubble," a large, inflatable room where reporters could watch the show on TV and quiz a few of the performers and celebrities who were around (sadly, Kanye West was not one of them), and the stadium, which was teeming with Bon Jovi fans, people in eco-friendly T-shirts, and, um, other Bon Jovi fans. After the jump, a few impressions from the day: More »

Mainstream Music Media Strangely Silent On Xuxa Performance

The majority of articles about the Live Earth rock extravaganza fell into two categories: "OK, but a little boring" or "Hey, Madonna was there, and some other stuff!". But we were wondering: After all the Rio organizers went through to save their concert, which had the largest crowd of all the Live Earth venues, where is the Xuxa coverage we, as media consumers, demand? It's Probably In Bad Taste To Say That Things Are "Heating Up," Isn't It

The first notes of Al Gore's globalmegaextravaganza Live Earth will sound in Sydney at 10 p.m. ET, and the concert has had its share of last-minute scrambles—a show in DC, Gogol Bordello getting the call-up to back Madonna, a never-before-seen interest in the Antarctic music scene, and, of course, Pete Wentz promotional appearances. But one question remains: Will people tune in? More »

Judge Reverses Decision, Live Earth Brazil Is Back On

The judge who blocked Live Earth Rio has reversed her own injunction after local police "convinced" her that they could handle the mega-show, the Pan American Games, and the city's insanely high murder rate simultaneously. While we're sad that the possibility of Xuxa coming north is now out of the picture, hey, at least we won't have to sit through Lenny Kravitz at Giants Stadium on Saturday! More »

Justin Timberlake Will Bring Sexy Back ... To Fight Global Warming

- Justin Timberlake is your "surprise" Live Earth guest in London. [NME]
- Also in London, Ricky Gervais will once again be given the chance to make an audience at Wembley Stadium feel incredibly awkward, and Madonna is going to play that terrible Martika ripoff as part of her set. [MTV UK]
- Live Earth Rio has been cancelled by a judge, who claims that the police are "too busy" to protect spectators; concert organizers are hoping to overturn the decision. What this means for Xuxa's involvement in the day is at present uncertain, although we'd like to invite her to come up for the Giants Stadium leg and say hi. [Reuters] More »
