Beth Ditto Poses Nude on the Cover of NME, Internet Readies Seventh-Grade Fat Jokes

snipshot_e4ongujdgqu.jpgAs you may have heard, Gossip singer Beth Ditto has displayed the majesty that her momma gave her on the cover of the NME this week. So wait, a few years ago, nudie shots of Ditto were confined to the lesbian sex mag On Our Backs and now she's being anointed the "Queen of Cool" by the U.K.'s most toilet paper-worthy tabloid while wearing nothing but painted-on kisses? Did we miss a meeting?

In America, where we saw the Gossip play one of the best shows of '06 to a half-empty club, Ditto is free from having to think about how she is viewed by large groups of the unwashed when she strips down to her underwear as if she was at an Olympia house party after Ladyfest. In England, the Gossip is turning out to be a regular little rock phenomenon, and so Ditto finds herself with the option of posing in the raw, back fat and all, on the cover of the country's most well-known (if little respected) music weekly. Ideally right-thinkin' folks should be thrilled by this turn of events, given the increasingly pneumatic norm of sexiness being peddled by pop culture, a kind of uniform female beauty that would bring a tear to Henry Ford's eye. Yet there's a weird and sordid "two steps back" feeling about it all, as if Ditto stuffing her junk in society's face has been instantaneously co-opted by a magazine getting off on the freakshow factor—copies to be sold, controversy to be manufactured, or hell, the creation of a potential new trend! Nu-fat? Fat-rock? They'll think of something—of an outspoken "big girl" who happens to be the frontwoman of a band on the rise.

But maybe more worrying than who's zooming who on the exploitation front is the incoherent and kinda pathetic way that post-riot grrl Ditto flip-flops in the accompanying interview about the complicity of the fashion industry and the media in fostering eating disorders, impossible beauty standards, and all sorts of other bad shit. Not to sound all nostalgic for the black and white ideologies of the pre-Misshapes days, but does someone wanna photocopy their old Bikini Kill zines and FedEx them to England? Meanwhile, at least until this particular blip in the media cycle fizzles out, we can, uh, look forward to lengthy and pointless comments box/message board debates about whether being fat is a "choice" and what constitutes being "unhealthy," endless junior high zingers, and the sinking feeling that, no matter where you come down on this "issue," hardcore feminism is a weird 20th-century aberration we'll someday tell our confused grandchildren about.

  • I'd do her. Fat or not she's sexy. Oh, I forgot she's a lesbian!

  • So, it's my fault that women hate their bodies. I know gay men are the reason we all have to be hairless nowadays, but I didn't think I had anything to do with women's bodies.

  • I thought Divine died like 5 years ago.

  • She is Marlboro Man of fat. Here's hoping her new celeb friends blow out her heart with cocaine.

  • That's ok. I was told that it's my fault that women wear sexy and demeaning clothes, regardless of the fact that no girl I have ever dated has ever, EVER paid attention to anything I ever said.

Including: "yes", "no," maybe", or even "Not now."

  • It's a bit cheap to reduce the public to having a referendum on the Gossip's music based on whether or not you find Beth Ditto sexy or liberating or whatever.

I think their music is pretty uninspired, which makes this attention grab that much more annoying to me.

  • This is going to go well.

  • @Ted Striker: exactly. underneath all those rolls...is still one cliched, uninspiring band.

However, the visual image her having fat sex with James Murphy on the other hand...

  • I acquired whatever their "classic" track was...lemme see, "Standing in the Way of Control".

I thought "Oh, I get it: their gimmick is being not good. That's fresh."

  • the bikini kill zine i owned consisted of 10 black n' white pages of complaining about evan dando.

  • @NickEddy: You need to listen to "Fire/Sign" - I don't much like the new songs, but that one is pretty ace, actually.

  • I know I don't look to rock stars for tips on healthy living and anyone that would needs to have their head examined. I won't even go there...

We've been respecting the attitudes and inhibitions of large and in charge black ladies for eons in America while chastising white girls like Beth for being over weight. I wonder why? I know that the Gossip will remain an underground band in the US for that reason. You can't be an overweight white chick in this country and still be considered sexy. It just doesn't happen. Even CNN had a story about it the other day. And yes, you have to be considered sexy to get popular if you are a female singer. It's just a fact.

The punk/indie scene that she comes from is filled to the brim with skinny boys and girls in pegged pants and heroin-y faces who all stand around and pose at rock shows. It's all so terribly BORING and should have ended when Bikini Kill and Nation of Ulysses broke up. It's kind of a refreshing change to see a sexy chunklet like her strutting across a stage even if I think their "dance rock" is kinda lame. I saw them 6 or 7 years ago and they were much better then.

  • @plasticaisle: Because we Black girls have been traditionally outside of traditional beauty. Nell Carter was admired, but in no way sexy.

"I know that the Gossip will remain an underground band in the US for that reason. You can't be an overweight white chick in this country and still be considered sexy." + "...I think their "dance rock" is kinda lame." = hunh?

  • I do not want to see this chick naked ever.

  • Keira Knightly's hanging this cover on her itty bitty bedroom wall.

It is my fault Beth Ditto hates her body. (she does)
It is Beth Ditto's fault I hate Keira Knightly.
    I love Keira Knightly.

  • wow, those of you who are calling the Gossip "uninspired" are really not listening. What'd you do, hear one track and base your argument on that?

  • @The Mozfather: Yes, I've been wondering: does my refusal to shave my chest make me both anti-conformist and a homophobe? Or maybe just a righteous supporter of positive male body images? Its all so confusing now...

  • The best Gossip album, by far, is the first one ("That's Not What I Heard").

  • Okay, fat gay man soapbox time now.

    1) The Gossip are a great band. Better than anyone else right now at that particular brand of punk-dance-skitter. And Ditto has a great voice.

    2) Her comments in NME do not make me dislike the Gossip. Sometimes musicians are made to look dumb in interviews like this, and sometimes they just ARE dumb and should stick to making music. I don't read interviews with musicians I like precisely because I don't want to know how dumb they are.

    3) Ditto gets her gay man comment half-right: the people whom gay men make self-loathing are other gay men. Flip through The Advocate or GQ, or take a stroll through West Hollywood.

    4) Feminism and pop culture have always been a tough mix.

  • Perhaps I didn't google correctly, but I have not found Beth Ditto to be a women's and gender studies scholar. To criticize her views (which hold a significant 2 ounces of truth) for not providing the panacea to the Anglo world's warped view of the female body is disappointingly typical. Rather congratulating Ditto and NME for providing a counterpoint to the plague unhealthily skinny and sexless female celebrity covers, Jezebel calls the magazine worthless and accepts only comments that bash Beth Ditto and The Gossip.
I am happy to see nude Ditto on NME and upset psuedo-woman Avril Levigne is nude on Blender. And Standing in the Way of Control is a tight song, haters.

  • Puh-leeze--her look is as much of a gimmick as any of the singing models/tarts all over the UK charts.

  • @Jupiter8: Bingo!

I have a plan. I relatively recently started playing guitar. It's going pretty well, but I'm not nearly rocking as hard as I eventually want to be. Okay, here's the Idea: I get a handicapped person (wheelchair, down syndrome, whatever) to sing lead. Then, no matter how well or poorly I play, people won't be able to criticize us. I'll see Beth Ditto's weight and raise her a peg leg.

Gossip's alright in that you can never have enough party music lying around, but they're nothing to call home about.

  • @bumblebee8064: And calling Avril Lavigne a pseudo-woman cements your spot on the moral highground?

  • I have huge amounts of respect for Beth Ditto now. That's a fearless pose. And the spread in On Our Backs was pretty fierce too.

  • Yes, they are a great band. But, no, the goggles do nothing.

  • It's not just her friendship with Kate Moss that seems odd; she's also a friend of Perez Hilton. Doesn't he make fun of other fat people?

  • I'll be honest with you guys. I read only GIANT ROBOT, and frankly I find their ideas of a cover not only sexy, but challenging to the views and ideas of the world.

And if that means that a giant, robotic egg-man is challenging, then yes I am right.

    And tired. So tired.

  • @janine: It will be like Timmy's band on South Park.

  • So did anything happen on the site while I was away?

  • I haven't been here for a couple of days, and this story was a pleasant surprise. I've been crushin' hard on Beth from day one.
I got a hug from her after a Winnipeg Gossip gig several years ago, and I contemplated never bathing again.
    Photo downloaded!

  • Um, I think she's hot as hell in this picture. I don't get much out of her music or personality, but I love the way her body looks. Ergo, I'm also objectifying her. What's hilarious is that she would probably prefer that my response be: "Yuck! What a disgusting fatty!" Because that's probably why she did the photo shoot. And that's our world, circa 2007!

  • @Al aka El Negro Magnifico: Okay, we believe you, you're Black.

  • Note to self: Janine added to personal shit list.

  • Aww, I thought it was funny. Is it better or worse that I'm black? Like it matters. You set it up; how could I not knock it down? It was like a fruit stand in a car chase.

  • jayd1313 says:
    I am a heterosexual female.
I have just discovered Beth Ditto through Rosie's O'Donnell's blog.
Beth is being compared to Janis Joplin and other great artists.
I find this women to be sensational!
    She is bold and beautiful!
Her voice is amazing. She is multitalented and magnetic.
Her naked photo on the cover of NME is incredibly beautiful.
She seems to be headed toward a brilliant future in the entertainment world.
I love her voice. I love her presence.
    Go Beth!
