Year-End Analysis: "Magnet" Celebrates The Year Of The Cat

magnetcover.jpgJust when we thought we were finished with our "Best Of 2006" lists, the new issue of Magnet arrived. Speaking of which, do you think Cat Power even know there was a photo shoot going on when she posed for this cover? Or was she just strolling around as she usually does, drinking her tea and wearing her gaudy dollar-sign chain and trying to see past her bangs? We digress:

THE GOOD: While the twenty-entry "Best albums" list is topped by the Hold Steady and Belle & Sebastian—no big surprises there—there are also some unexpected, well-deserved choices, such as the Essex Green, Mates Of State, and the Format.
THE BAD: The last ...Trail Of Dead album was a mess. An interesting mess at times, mind you, but not interesting enough to land it at No. 8.
THE WHAAAAA?: What happened to Magnet's "other great albums that you didn't hear this year" round-up? And considering that this is one of the few magazines to regularly review EPs, when are they going to start doing a "best singles" list?
