Idolator Demands: It's Time To Bring "Mis-Shapes" Back To The Common People!

misshapes.jpgLast night, we were listening to a copy of Pulp's recently remastered Different Class album—it's an import, though you can get it super cheap at CD-WOW—and when the first song came on, we immediately cringed. Why? Because it's "Mis-Shapes," and whenever we hear it, instead of thinking about Jarvis Cocker strutting around the stage of the Reading Festival, we think of a bunch of sweaty lil' brats throwing up on each other. In America, the popularity of MisShapes (the obnoxious party-slash-DJ collective) has forever ruined "Mis-Shapes" (the song).

We at Idolator want to change that, so we're starting an inevitably fruitless campaign to make "MisShapes" so well known, no one will ever again associate it with anything other than Pulp. We don't want to hide our heads in shame when it comes on anymore, and so we have to band together to make this song so big, Bush will reference it in a State Of The Union speech without actually knowing what it means. Just like he did with "Jenny From The Block" a few years ago.

So, your mission: Make "Mis-Shapes" famous. Forward the MP3 below to everyone. Send it to a Gilmore Girls soundtrack supervisor, or, barring that, an actual Gilmore Girl. Buy it multiple times at the iTunes store. If all else fails, hand it to Zach Braff. We're just that desperate.

  • :-) My copies of these are coming along in the mail shortly thanks to a friend who was over there recently and I can't wait.

That live version of "Common People" is just indescribably grand.

  • Different Class is one of my 5 or 10 favorite albums of the '90s, but I always thought "Mis-Shapes" was by far the weakest song on the thing.

  • we don't look the same as you
we don't do the things you do
but we live round here too

    oh really?

  • I had forgotten how fucking good that album is. I cracked open the deluxe edition the other day. Mile End is fantastic. What was that from? A b-side? A soundtrack?

  • i shall go forth and spread the word.

    i won't use guns...

    i won't use bombs...

  • denial will only exacerbate the problem.

  • Where's the love Idolator? Where's the goddamn love?

  • 'mile end' was on the 'trainspotting' soundtrack.

  • I just revisited the Pulp section of my cds not too long ago and forgot how clever and strange it is. have been listening to it almost non-stop. I vow to spread the real Mis-Shapes.

  • I'm starting a dance party called His n' Hers and you all should start one named after a Pulp song. The kids will be so confused they won't know what to do and Pricess Coldstare will have mascara running down her perfect cheek. unite in the name of Pulp!

  • No love for "This is Hardcore"? I am not Jesus but i have the same initials. I am the man that stays home and does the dishes. -R

  • i dont get how goddamn misshapes ever got popular in the first place. i went once. when i walked in, "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim was playing. Later, "Heaven is a Place on Earth" was transitioned into "Connection" by Elastica. Seriously, fuck that shit. Fuck untrained DJs, fuck zero creativity, fuck post-irony irony.

    seriously, fucking "Praise You".

  • Yes, MisShapes is horrible. But Jarvis and Steve from Pulp DJ'd at it a few years ago. They were the first big celebrity DJs, and the club night blew up shortly afterward.

Now Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan go there. It's so over.

  • i went to misshapes once. i expected it to be really fun based on what i'd read in magazines and seen online. going there made me realize that andy warhol, the factory, studio 54, etc. must've been lame as hell too. thanks for ruining every historical thing i ever thought was cool, guys.

  • Come to Miss-Shapes UK - we're much more fun and have Girls Aloud.

But yes, Different Class is amazing. I can't believe when I was originally bought it as a gift, I took it back like a little poppy teenager. Now, it's ace. Not investigated the remasted yet but sure will.

  • Well, thank god they didn't name themselves "Disco 2000." Then, we'd surely have to hang ourselves.

PS- I DJ myself with a DJ partner in another city and I went to see MisShapes over Labor Day weekend. I was expecting to find an arty, underground indie-rock paradise.

Instead, I saw Ashlee Simpson, a posse of sirority girls on a night out in their "new wave" get-up featuring red plastic beads, white pumps, and lace tights, and a plethora of androgynous boys obsessed with becoming American Apparel's Next Top Model.

  • saw the diff class tour at irving plaza

    always preferred his n hers

saw blur/pulp at acaddemy 1994. most of you didnt

    braacckkk !!
