We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, the first album featuring the Johnny Marr-fortified lineup of Modest Mouse, is set to come out next month, but MP3s have started to make their way around the Web's back alleys. The record's most striking contributions don't come from the former Smiths guitarist, but from Shins lead singer James Mercer; he's on three of Ship's tracks, including "Florida," where Isaac Brock's growly yell gives way to Mercer floating in with a sweet, singsongy chorus:
Modest Mouse - Florida [MP3, link removed]
Modest Mouse - Missed The Boat [MP3, link removed]
Modest Mouse [MySpace]

I'm a couple of listen into the album and I have to say I'm pretty impressed.
i havent heard it all yet. do you love it?
Wow. You can really pick out Marr in the instrumentation.
I am definitely excited to hear these songs. This photo is hilarious. Lots of rock types criticize hip-hop artists for dressing up in costume and putting on an act (whic they do). Is a rapper acting like he's a street thug any more of a pose than these dudes combing the "Where's my methadone" look and "Kill da wabbit" to perfection?
Weirdly, with the exception of the last few tracks, I don't hear Marr at all. Which is one of the reasons I like it so much-his inclusion seemed very subtle to me.
Does Isaac Brock remind anyone else of Bam Margera? 'Cause even if I'm the only one, it still makes me like Modest Mouse (at least) a little bit less.
I've been listening to it for the last few days, and I have to say I think it's pretty fantastic.
'florida' actually sounds a ton like early u2, along with the smiths. right down to the wordless chorus croon backup vocals and the propulsive riffs, a la a modern 'this charming man.'
I liked it well enough on first listen, although it's no Moon & Antarctica.
There's a regular hatefest going on over on Vanilla right now, though, from all the sentimental, original MM fans.
i just finished the 4th back to back listen to this album....its everything it needs to be and more. they've gotten back to their roots, added some shins vocals and have mr. marr doing things with his gutiar that people cannot even figure out...well done.
Wow... great newz (for MM fans) that its been leaked.
I hope I can find it sooner than later, or.. they up the iTunes release date (I'll buy it either way)
Still searching...
