Fifteen years ago, Queens hip-hop duo Black Sheep released "The Choice Is Yours," undoubtedly one of the best singles of the '90s; shortly thereafter, they boarded the Engine Engine No. 9 to Nowheresville. But yesterday, they released 8WM/Novokane, their first album in twelve years, and we've been enjoying the lead-off single "Whodat?" for the last few weeks:

i like it! and if you ever run across their first album somewhere, pick it up! it's a good time. if you have it lying about somewhere and haven't played it in the last ten years, give it a spin! it still holds up, if you ask me.
"So, uh honey take a hike/go fly a kite/and umm I'm outta here, aight"-Strobelite Honey. Just remembered this lyric from their first album. One of the best hip-hop albums off all time. Humorous and political stuff on there.
I always felt a little bad for Black Sheep because they were the latecomers to the Native Tongues parade. If memory serves, their debut (Wolf in Sheep's Clothing) dropped in late '91 - just one year before Dre's The Chronic fired a gat through the entire conscious-rap genre.
I've seen Black Sheep on tour with De La Soul, who warmly introduce the Sheepers and talk about them like they were always part of the DeLa-Tribe-Latifah-Prince Paul-Jungle Bros. posse. But they really didn't get to enjoy that Moment before it all came to a halt.
