Leak Of The Day, Part II: Apparently Guns N' Roses Has Some New Song About China And Democracy

axlllll.jpgOver the weekend, we noticed plenty of Google searches coming our way with the phrase "new guns n roses leak mp3"; and sure enough, an MP3 of an (allegedly) recent studio version of Chinese Democracy's title track has found its way to our inbox. There's a rumor going around that a few select GNR fansites were given advances of the album, and that one particularly well-off listener then paid big bucks for his/her own copy, which was then released into the wild. We'll have more on that later, but for now, take a listen, and tell us if the opening riff sounds suspiciously as though Axl has been rocked like a hurricane:

  • It picks up a little at the three minute mark, but still. . . are we sure this version wasn't for the S.F.W. soundtrack?

  • It's good that tracks from this album keep leaking. This will go a long, long way to tempering expectations.

  • I could think of worse inspiration than the Scorpions. At least AXL can now compete with Klaus Meine for one of the worse haricuts in hard rock. At least Klaus has the "80's" as an excuse.

  • ....Meh. Ten years of all these delays for that?

  • I concur with cockfightingbarmitzvah. Ten years is a long time to wait for a tepid rocker like that.

Ten years of meticulous studio noodling and knob-twiddling should render a song so rock-tacular that I should instantly lose bowel/sphincter control upon the initial listening.

But here I sit, clean boxers intact.

    Meh, indeed.

  • Since when did Mark McGwire grow dreadlocks?

  • Best leak yet! The riff doesn't sound like Hurricane once it kicks in, but leaving it naked like that was certainly questionable. Great song, although I wish Axl would have left more of the high screaming without adding the lower voice.

Not as much blatant riff stealing/recycling as the new Megadeth though...

  • I like this one too. The leaked track "The Blues" is my favorite so far, though.

    @ noamjamski:

Not a fan of the new megadeth? i think it's his best work in years.

  • I hated the song "Chinese Democracy" until I heard this new leak...and I saw them play the song twice last year. Now I'm digging it.

I agree, "The Blues" is the best of these leaks.

Also, since the song TWAT leaked (There Was A Time), does anyone find the phrase "Guns N' Roses' TWAT leaks" amusing? Just curious.

Idolator has a leaked track off Guns n’ Roses’ twelve-years-in-the-making “Chinese Democracy” album, which is apparently how long it takes to make yourself sound like Godsmack covering 90s Pixies. Watch out, karaoke bars!Another posthumous Nick Drake release?

  • @Vince Neilstein: Naw, I actually do really like it, but the main verse riff in Sleepwalker is a simplified version of Holy Wars, and then there is that track where the main riff is Wasted Years by Maiden.

And then there is the whole Tout Le Monde thing but that is another story altogether....

  • I hope Axl has a few Wings covers on the new disc too-I'd kill to hear G'N'R tackle "Magneto and Titanium Man".

  • .....The biggest problem with this tune is that most people will change the channel or fall asleep during the intro. Axel, "Dark Side of the Moon" has already been done!

.....I liked the raw-sounding guitar intro. That, at least, was a somewhat original tone. Too bad they went to mild-mannered guitars after that. Wouldn't want to offend the AARP set! Otherwise, this is the nth + 1 retread of the "Smoke on the Water" riff. And Axel sounded like he was trying to copy Linkin Park's singer, too.

.....Luckily, this doesn't sound much like "Rock You Like a Hurricane." It's a very generic, not-very-rocker. If this was a demo tape, they'd be told to tour and develop more.

  • I agree with everyone who is underwhelmed by this - even if the good part is 3 minutes in, it's way too long to wade through the twaddle that I've heard so far.

  • The other leaked songs I can take or leave, but this one's a keeper. Anyone who thinks the intro's too long/boring should be checked for ADD. It lasts only one minute and sets up the song perfectly.

And the raw guitar sound does come blasting back with that "lot more hate than youuu!" part. Its the old "soft-verse-loud-chorus" trick - but it works. And that "Out of!... TIIIMMME!" bit was a nice way to end it.

I wouldn't call it a GREAT song, certainly not worth the 10-year wait. But, for what it is, it's not bad!
