Our link to ice-cream themed songs earlier got us thinking about the knob-twiddler who went by the name Volume All*Star; he (it?) released a couple of records on Slabco, which was once a label and is now a commercial-music house-slash-T-shirt concern. The Slabco site has all of the label's back catalogue available for download, but we'd be remiss if we didn't post the song that caused us to make the connection. "Ice Cream," from 1997's Close Encounters Of The Bump And Grind, is the story of a man who apparently got sick off some tainted frozen treats, and it's told through loops and beats that are bent in dizzying ways.

A nice reminder of a good album. So much unfortunate 'hip hop started with Beck, right?' sludge at the time but Slabco had a better sense of things.
I think V-all star was the man behind Slabco, Steven. Is http://www.slabco.com still up?
The Slabco roster is still my favorite indie/hip hop crossover experiment.
