Listening Station: Built To Spill Head For The Islands

bts.jpgThe news that Built To Spill would be recording a reggae track as its next single cocked an eyebrow or two around these parts, but—surprise!—"They Got Away," which was released yesterday, is actually quite good; the dubby beat intertwines nicely with Doug Martsch's expansive guitar solos, and the song's nearly-seven-minute stretch brought us back to the Perfect From Now On era, even if this version of that time is more "late night basement" than "glorious summer day." (Bonus factoid: The track was produced by Dave Trumfio, late of synth-pop masters Pulsars.)

  • I cringed a bit when I read "reggae" too. Bearded white guys + reggae usually ends poorly. Look forward to hearing this when I get home.

  • Nicely played political message in there as well. I wish they weren't on Warner Bros so I could buy the last album. Guess I'll wait until I find it used.

  • @PUFFERMEDIA: is there some reason why you can't buy stuff that's on Warner Bros. I'm a Prince fan too, but come on...

  • vanilla ice tried his hand at reggae too!

  • @Puffer- Yeah, that's a great idea- don't support one of the truly original bands out there making good music on their own terms and doing it consistently well, wait to buy it used. Good for you.

    sike.

  • My Morning Jacket had Phones went west, that wasn't half bad either.

  • Listen, I've given BtS as much support as I've given any band over the years. Bought all of their albums up to this last one, seen them in concert 5 or 6 times, tried to get as many people to listen to them as I could. However, I f*ing hate RIAA and I've decided that, meaningless though it may be, I refuse to support those labels that comprise that org. There are a lot of independent labels and musicians that will appreciate my support a lot more, and I feel a lot better giving them my money. And I'm not running off to bit torrent major label albums. If you're going to have some principles have some principles. You can bitch about the RIAA but are you giving them your money? Cause that $16 you just forked over the new, oh, Kelly Clarkson, isn't going into her pocket. And BtS, in the numbers they sell, are probably not even breaking even. It's futile no doubt but at least I don't feel hypocritical every time I buy something.

And come on, like y'all never wait until you can find something used before you buy it?

  • Given the paucity of used record stores in my city, no i don't buy used.
and if i ever buy a kelly clarkson CD...well, i can't think of anything to say except that i will never buy a kelly clarkson cd because i hate shitty music. I admire your stance and your principles, puffer, but when it comes to supporting bands that i like, i will buy their music everytime, regardless of labels.

  • Oh, and Gorilla vs. Bear has the b-side of this single, which is also very good.

  • @Aquemini: I suppose I should have used the "we" pronoun rather than the "you" - I did not mean to imply that you would be buying any particular cd. I just pulled Clarkson out of my ass 'cause she gets a lot of play in these parts, and is a good example of someone in the clutches of a major label. I understand supporting the bands you love, and every time some major label cd comes out I have to shore up my position - I still haven't heard the new Decemberists in entirety. Fortunately, I live in NE with Newbury Comics, a great chain of cd stores, with a top notch indie as well as used selection. But check out half.com; it's amazing what you can find on there for really cheap.

  • Puffer- All good. I just love BTS and, while i, too, dislike the RIAA, i don't tend to associate bands like BTS, while on major labels, with the RIAA.

  • at work all day, missed the mp3 link. dangit!!
