We tend to greet the arrival of a new, overly earnest sad-white-guy CD the same way we treat herpetic raccoons: With the fear that it's just going to be the same thing we've experienced before, only less exciting. And so Youth Group's Casino Twilight Dogs sat untouched in our promo pire for a while—after all, this is a band that's opened up for Coldplay, which is never a good sign. But while Casino is about as timid as you'd expect, the tunes are just sharp enough to keep it from falling in the "middling-indie" category:

They do a fantastic cover of Alphaville's 80s anthem "Forever Young." I first heard it on The OC. (Sigh, hangs head in shame)
Hey now, Black Mountain opened for Coldplay ... though a case could be made for them fitting your profile too, maybe.
They've also opened for Death Cab. But I guess that doesn't help much.
