ARTIST: Olivia Tremor Control
SONG: "Fireplace"
FIRST APPEARANCE: "California Demise" 7-inch, 1994
WHY IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN A-SIDE: "Fireplace" is one of the earliest pieces of this storied Athens outfit's body of work, but it remains one of the strongest songs in their vast discography, in our view. (And that's saying something, because honestly, given the chance, we'd post about them at least once a week.) It's a rave-up that goes increasingly nuts with every chorus, and thanks to those piano-bashing freak-outs it's probably the closest thing to a headbanger in the first chunk of the Elephant 6 catalog:

Fireplace is my favorite song of all time. I have it on the singles collection, and I play it for anyone I am auditioning to come into my inner friend circle. If they don't like that song, they are kicked to the curb. True story.
When I saw Apples in Stereo, I was very sad that Bill Doss was relegated to tambourine duty. He has (had?) so much in him.
