Please Release Me: The Pointer Sisters Step Up

steppincover.jpgWelcome to another edition of "Please Release Me," in which your Idolators request—nay beg—that an out-of-print, delayed or held-up-in-customs album be issued Stateside:

Artist: The Pointer Sisters
Hometown: Oakland, Ca.
Album: Steppin', 1975
What is it?: Released when the group was still a quartet—and long before its members became neutron-dancing MTV stars—Steppin' is a funk-soul find, one that's best described by Idolator commenter mackro: "[It's] probably the greatest R&B record that you can find easily for under a buck on vinyl (but no less than $50 on CD). The full version of 'How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side)' slays almost anything that came near it in the groove department (and also is lyrically referenced by Missy Elliott circa 2000 or so.)"
Where is it?: Amazingly, this is only available as an import, and while it won't set you back as a fifty-spot, it's a shame that U.S. record stores aren't stockin' Steppin'.

UPDATE: Turns out it is available in the U.S., at the Hip-O-Select store. Thanks for the comment-section help!

  • oh god, those shoes!

i would imagine this is some pretty good stuff, cover art notwithstanding.

  • Were you guys inspired to look up Steppin' after posting the Sisters' cover of the Stevie Wonder song ("Sleeping Alone") the other day? 'Cuz I did (when I add songs to iTunes I always look for original album titles/cover art), and that cover just charmed the hell out of me. It's so gloriously tacky and of its time - and weirdly prophetic, because weren't high-heeled lace-up sneakers "in" with women just a couple of years ago? Anyway...

I liked the Wonder cover, and if the whole album's worthwhile in an old-school R&B way, maybe I'll check it out. Thx.

  • Why are you going through my record collection, Idolator?

  • You can get Steppin', Having a Party, That's a Plenty, and Live At the Opera House from Hip-O Select. They're something like $18 each.
