It's not much of a secret that the Baltimore trio Celebration is pretty much my favorite new band of recent days—their first album was full of fury and beauty, and they're a spectacle live, in large part because lead singer Katrina Ford is a whirling dervish who isn't afraid to drag the audience into her stage show. The Modern Tribe, their second album, comes out in October, and it's easily one of my most anticipated albums of the year; the opening track, "Evergreen," is a soaring, astonishing song that's anchored by a twirling organ line buried deep within:

I'll be happy to give this a listen because by all rights I should have enjoyed their first album but it didn't quite connect with me, so maybe the new stuff will be what clicks. (Then again maybe I just need to see them live!)
I've heard some of Katrina's earlier stuff with Jaks and Birdland, and it is way better, much darker and more interesting. I'm going to give this new record a chance, but right now, to me, "Evergreen" sounds like a Yeah Yeah Yeahs throwaway track.
I have a warm spot for the Celebration. They're the only band to solicit me via MySpace that I've ever liked.
I am so so so looking forward to this album too. Celebration is easily one of the most underappreciated bands around. Always great live -- but it can be difficult listening. I saw them twice before I said, "Okay, yes, I think I get this now ... and I LOVE IT."
Really? I saw them open for TV on the Radio recently, and I was less than impressed. Maybe they had an off night, but it just did not sound good.
@sweetchuck: At McCarren Pool? I've heard the same from someone else who was there -- I didn't attend, I don't do outside events, blegh. Based on his comments and yours, I just get the feeling that despite the crossover between the TVOTR camp and the Celebration camp (Katrina sings backup for them often), your average TVOTR fan is probably not going be that into Celebration. Looking at the positive comments in this thread -- and based on the audiences I've seen at previous shows, I'd say that the average Celebration fan seems to be over 30 and female.
@therichgirlsareweeping: Yeah, that was the show. Just couldn't get into them, even though I've heard good stuff about them. Maybe it's because I'm male and (barely) under 30?
@sweetchuck: Probs! I hate to make sweeping generalizations, but ... I mean, I'm not that into TVOTR, except like, you know, the really early stuff.
I really like Celebration.
I can actually thank TV on the Radio in public for introducing me.
