In this cover of Joni Mitchell's 1971 devotional ode "A Case Of You"—taken from the just-released A Tribute To Joni Mitchell album—Prince nearly out-mellows the original, trading Mitchell's coffee-shop guitars for some low-key piano-playing. We're not sure if this is the same version that wound up on Prince's rare One Nite Alone... collection that was released a few years back, but either way, we're grateful to hear it now:

Prince first started covering this as far back as 1983. I have a bootleg from a series of shows he did at Paisley Park in 2002, smack dab in the middle of his "One Night Alone..." tour. During an acoustic set, he performs it just him and the guitar, but in another set he does it on piano accompanied by his band. Both versions are fantastic, and it's great to finally have a studio release.
Babystrange, the first instance I have of it in my collection is a rehearsal in August of 1983. The first public performance was August 3rd at the First Avenue club, which was professionally filmed for a never released documentary and/or live concert video. It is also on the One Night Alone album.
it was my love of Prince that led me to discover Joni Mitchell's music. the first CD i ever purchased, in fact, was Court & Spark. i will be forever grateful to Prince, because she remains, hands down, my favorite songwriter of all time. thanks for the track, idolator.
.....Excellent! That's some really nice piano work there! Wow.
just because no one else here has made it totally clear, this is indeed the exact same version as the studio cut on "one nite alone...", which was released to the NPG music club in 2002.
