Welcome to another edition of the Coulda-Shoulda-Woulda Files, in which we try to win your hearts and minds with a forgotten song that deserved a better life.
Artist: Faith No More
Song: "Everything's Ruined," 1992
What happened: After the early-'90s success of "Epic" and "Fall To Pieces," people mistook FNM as another "wacky" punk-funk band, not realizing that their heavy-metal roots. So when the super-schizo Angel Dust was released, the label had no idea where to release the chugging, brooding numbers ("Midlife Crisis") or the poppier slap-bass tunes ("A Small Victory"). So they just sort of released them all, which means the excellent "Everything's Ruined" never quite cut through the clutter.
Why it should have been a hit: It's a weird mix of quick-and-dirty thrash and over-reaching pop theatrics, like Meatloaf on SST. Plus, we were 15 when this song came out, and it still sounds amazing.

never heard of 'em.
my new album, Rest Well, Thy Goblin-Chylde on emusic feb. 24.
Angel Dust is an incredible album. I always cringe when VH1/MTv refers to Faith No More as a one hit wonder.
Great song. Great album. I'm partial to "Midlife Crisis" and "Be Aggressive."
The label knew where to release it, but Patten obviously took them in a different direction. Rock radio didn't embrace "Angel Dust" like it did "The Real Thing."
I recall MTV getting on board and playing some videos. It's not like the album was completely ignored.
Did my comment get lost?
Nope, there it is. Stupid Gawker server hamsters.
Loved this album. I miss it.
You can put me down as still spinning this one now and again.
I agree with all those who say FNM was unfairly dismissed thanks to an album slapped together at the last minute (The Real Thing). Angel Dust is still one of my all-time favorite records (favorite songs: Midlife Crisis, Everything's Ruined, and Kindergarten).
There are a lot of bands out there right now who owe their asses to Faith No More.
Fans should check out Tomahawk, one of Patton's new bands. Awesome if you miss FNM.
i still consider angel dust a favorite. it's outlived most of my other favorites of that era.
Angel Dust is a favorite - and I have to agree that "Be Aggressive" is underrated, as well.
Epic almost turned me off immediately to them on my first MTV exposure, but I gave the entire album a listen and got it.
This song also has one of the greatest videos of all time.....
"Angel Dust" is a perfect album. Every time I spin it up it plays all the way through, and I still listen to it regularly even all these years later.
