Rule number 1 for covering the Smiths or Morrissey: don't try to sound like Morrissey when you're singing, because you will sound stupid.

Only Morrissey may sing like Morrissey and not be ridiculed. The same goes for whipping the microhpone cord around fancily and wearing shiny clothing.

Smiths covers are almost universally sucky. You'd think the literate and witty Neil Hannon could handle "There Is A Light..." but his version is limp compared to the original.

Although, I do think Tatu's difficulty with the English language makes their cover pretty funny. "I am huuman and uh need do be luved.."

I think the t.A.T.u. slash Trevor Horn version is fabulous. The rest terrible. I mean, even Morrissey likes their version, and he hates everything!

Maybe it's my nagging nostalgia for all things mid-'90s, but I love that Quicksand version. That was back when the idea of a hard-rock band covering an '80s alt-rock song was still somewhat original.

Yeah, I have to agree about the Quicksand version. It's even better live.
