Time for another installment of the Cover-Song Showcase Showdown, in which we dig up numerous recreations and bastardizations of a beloved song, and let you vote on which is the least offensive. Today's homage-worthy hit: The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?", a song that all of us listened to while stoned in high school, making the two-in-the-morning realization that while Morrissey is probably saying he's "the son and the heir," he could also be saying that he's, like, "the sun and the air!" Or maybe that was just us. Three versions are below, as is Soho's "Hippychick," which may as well be considered a cover because of the way it bites the song's riff. Vote for your favorite, and make Moz smile again. He's such a sad little bear!

Or maybe that was just us.
Trust me, it wasn't. That said, I wasn't even stoned.
Wow they all kinda suck.
Did that sound bitchy?
You know, you totally forgot Everclear's cover. Of course, if readers were forced to listen to that and the Love Spit Love cover back to back, it would bring to mind conjoined twins who were connected at the mouth having a puking contest.
Where's the Everclear/Snake RIver Conspiracy versions?
i also heard 'sun and the air,' also stone-cold sober. but i was an english dork and as a teenager *enthralled* by witty wordplay such as that. i also enjoyed the symmetry and twists in 'shakespeare's sister.'
morrissey back then was totally porn for lit-mag geeks.
Rule number 1 for covering the Smiths or Morrissey: don't try to sound like Morrissey when you're singing, because you will sound stupid.
Only Morrissey may sing like Morrissey and not be ridiculed. The same goes for whipping the microhpone cord around fancily and wearing shiny clothing.
My ears are burning!
Smiths covers are almost universally sucky. You'd think the literate and witty Neil Hannon could handle "There Is A Light..." but his version is limp compared to the original.
Although, I do think Tatu's difficulty with the English language makes their cover pretty funny. "I am huuman and uh need do be luved.."
I think the t.A.T.u. slash Trevor Horn version is fabulous. The rest terrible. I mean, even Morrissey likes their version, and he hates everything!
Maybe it's my nagging nostalgia for all things mid-'90s, but I love that Quicksand version. That was back when the idea of a hard-rock band covering an '80s alt-rock song was still somewhat original.
Yeah, I have to agree about the Quicksand version. It's even better live.
i can't believe more people aren't showing soho love. 'hippychick' is forever burned into the 'fond wdre memories' segment of my brain.
