The news that Peter, Bjorn & John's ubiquitous "Young Folks" had received the bluegrass treatment hit our inbox today, and we figured it would be as good a time as any to put it head-to-head with a few other versions of the song we've come across, including the German-language take on the song we unearthed a few months back. Four takes are below; give them a listen and vote for your favorite. (If only we could find out what the Stop Peter, Bjorn & John guy thinks of all these covers! Alas.)

now i'm sure i'm not the first to notice but doesn't the melody in the intro there sound strikingly similar to the vocal melody of "hash pipe" by weezer.

"Young Folks" is one of those rare songs that seems to have been waiting out there in the ether, biding its time until someone put the notes together and recorded it. I call them Ur-songs--songs so fundamental that they scratch an itch in almost everybody. Some bands have one or two. A very few bands are tuned to that special wavelength and can do it over and over (Beatles anyone?). Unfortunately they also inspire understandable backlash by people who get sick of hearing "that damn PBJ song" everywhere. The Fader produces a podcast every month to go along with their issue. The September 06 podcast has "Young Folks" on it, which gradually segues into a solo sitar version of the same melody. It's beautiful and uncredited. Can anybody figure out who it is? It's about 21 minutes in. Sorry the post is so long, but enjoy the scavenger hunt.
