Remember the Audiogalaxy era, when badly tagged MP3s credited to the wrong artists would travel around the Internet willy-nilly, with no one correctly ID'ing their ID3 tags? We do, all too well. That's why we've launched "The Unknown Cover," where we enlist our readers' vast knowledge in the effort to match incorrectly tagged songs from peer-to-peer searches gone by to their proper artists. (Feel free to send in your own.) Here's an entry from a reader who calls himself The Hardcore Midget:
I downloaded this song a few years back, seeing that it was credited to Zakk Wylde. It's not even him playing the guitar, you can tell. However, it's not a bad 80s metal/pop song. Any idea?
We're stumped, although perhaps the song's author is in hiding because he realized that any royalties he'd make from this song would have to be handed over to Billy Squier immediately. This song's chorus bites from "The Stroke" even more than "Fix Up, Look Sharp" does!

SO that's where Van Halen stole the coin spinning trick for the beginning of "Big Fat Money."
Hardcore Midget is a great band name in itself.
do people not just type lyrics into a search engine anymore?
@Whigged: Yeah, I'm sure VH took all their best ideas from Gotthard.
@RepentTokyo and @Catbirdseat: i tried typing in the lyrics and came up empty. so thanks! i'm sure the midget in question will be grateful as well.
@Whigged: Wow.
A song from "Balance" gets referenced on Idolator.
I've got nothing.
My favourite mis-tagged song is whenever I find these amazing, never-before-heard-of duets - "Dolly Parton and Leslie Feist singing 'Son Of A Preacher Man'!?!?" - and they always always always turn out to be a cover of "Leaving On A Jet Plane" by Chantal Kreviazuk. Talk about disappointment.
.....Well, posting a Zack Wylde link is a sure way to get me to click! "Desire" and "I Don't Want to Change the World" have already come up on my media player this morning on shuffle-mode, and more would be great!
.....I can see why this might have gotten mislabeled. They do have Zack's bad-ass tone down to a T. Missing, however, is those super-wide, squealy vibrato notes Zack does. Squawawewewewewewewe! Kachunk a chunk! Mmm. I digress.
.....This is not a bad tune at all. They aren't as shreddy as Zack Wylde, but it'll do!
....."Balance" was my favorite van Hagar disk, as Eddie managed to get closer to getting back to the notorious brown-sound. "Big Fat Money" showed that he still had crazy creative proficiency, "Amsterdam" had that excellent riff plus the attitude, and my favorite, "Aftershock," had that really cool flanged guitar tone reminiscent of "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love." Eddie van Halen plays best when he's pissed!
i love you guys.
@brasstax:
do you really need an [insert sarcasm here]invitation?
