Corndolly was one of the better bands that came out of Champaign, Ill., in the mid-'90s, when guitar-toting outfits grew there like wildflowers; their smart lyrics and thick chords were laced with the possibility that everything could fall apart with the flick of a pick. The high point in their too-brief catalog is "Afterschool Special"; it's propelled by a descending bass line and a paranoid feeling that the world's closing in.

Oh, this reminds me... I should dig out my Corndollies cd and get all C-86 on my own ass this afternoon.
I love that disc. Squirting Banana Dildo is my favorite track. It's also on a comp called "The Mud Puddle Playoffs" which features a bunch of cool Champaign bands from the early 90's.
That's a solid CD. Squirting Banana Dildo is a great track. It's also my favorite song with the word "dildo" in the title.
Anybody who digs these ladies should check out the comp "Mud Puddle Playoffs" which features a bunch o' bands from the early 90's Champaign scene (as it were).
.....Very nice. You could break Afterschool down into separate parts, and each is interesting. There's wealth of talent there. I'm not a huge fan of the single-coil grit tone, but this won me over in spite of that.
.....Car Crash comes off as more of an open-ended jam. Again, though, even on a simple pattern, the members of this band remain interesting. I really didn't like the lead guitar tone, though. It was a serious obstacle to hearing the rest of the band, like a layer of tar that had to be scried through.
.....Yeah, you heard that right: a hair-metal devotee complaining about the lead guitar. Must be a sign of the Apocalypse...
There's a whole world of interesting music in flyover country that seems to be beneath the Idolator Radar ... I won't mention specific bands because I'm sure you get plenty of label flacks trying to 'tip' you about whatever band they're paid to pimp.
hey, we love tips!!
seriously though, i have much love for the midwest-- i went to school there, and had some of the best long drives of my life while on breaks.
the stuff Angie Heaton has done since Corndolly is awfully nice. it's worth checking out.
speaking of (ex-)Champaign folk, the Like Young records are really good too.
since, you know, tips were encouraged.
