The Sao Paulo post-punk-funk outfit As Mercenarias has been around for more than 25 years, and Soul Jazz collected some of their earliest output on the compilation Beginning Of The End Of The World last year. The twitchy "Me Perco" and "Inimigo" sound like the end result of a steady Kleenex/Gang Of Four diet, and both have been inspiring us to do a herky-jerky chair dance (trust us: it ain't pretty), while the low-end-heavy "Lembranças," which came out in 1988, has a ghostly choir swoop in between verses:

Kicking someones ass is just another way of saying hello in Brazil.
Oooh, this is going well with my Grauzone dose today! Thanks, Idolator! I had this CD in my car, but haven't added it to my commute playlist yet. Clearly this is what's been missing from my am subway rides.
