Betty Davis was a funk dynamo, and her catalog was full of blazing, sexy songs that still sound ahead of their time; quite the feat, since she put out her self-titled debut album in 1973. It's been a long time coming, but Davis' earliest work is finally getting the deluxe reissue treatment by the terrific Seattle label Light In The Attic. If ever we were going to get on our soapbox and urge our readers to go out and pick up a couple of new releases, it would be these—but we'll eschew the preaching and just post one track from each reissue below:

I couldn't agree more. Not only are those early albums awesome, she has a really interesting story - check out if you can the cover story on her from the current (I think) issue of "Wax Poetics."

Candidate for the Baddest Woman In The World title. Goddamn, that's beautiful.
The cherry on top would have been a third reissue of Nasty Gal, as that's her best one -- although I'm in the minority there. And there were probably rights problems with that one anyway. Ah well.
Anyway, these new cheap reissues happily replaced the slipshod UK bootleg issues. (The UK'sters spelled her album "They Say I'm Differengt" on the spine, or something similar. It was embarrassing. Yay LITA!)
Any truth to the rumor that "He Was a Big Freak" was written about Miles Davis? And dittos on the eagerness to replace old UK reissues.
She had some phenomenal personnel on these records, too. Her band was the shit.
He Was A Big Freak was about Jimi Hendrix.
