The Vault: Cymande Should Be Played At All Hours

cymande.jpgYour Idolators have many obsessions—puppets, blooper reels, puppet-blooper reels—but one that's been popping up inexplicably lately is Spike Lee's The 25th Hour, a movie that's likely much better than you remember, and which is highlighted by a fantastic (but disturbing) nightclub scene featuring Cymande's 1973 funk-soul classic "Bra." The group's catalog has long been plundered by both sample-needy DJs and soundtrack supervisors—Lee also used "Bra" in the much-likely-worse-than-you-remember Crooklyn—and even though we've heard this track about a dozen or so times in the past week alone, we're still not sick of it:

  • beck and ozomatli covered this at the latin grammys a bunch of years back. i wish i still had the mp3...

  • That whole nightclub sequence was dazzling. I loved that he threw in Liquid Liquid's "Cavern," too, resisting the temptation to go for the more obvious "White Lines."

I remember liking Crooklyn fine, with the caveat that it wasn't remotely in the same league as Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever or She's Gotta Have It. Better than Mo' Better Blues, roughly as entertaining/flawed as School Daze - does that sound about right? I honestly haven't seen it in more than a decade.

(The mid-'90s Spike Lee joint I liked best was Clockers. And I've seen that again more recently and felt that it had aged quite well.)

  • Get on their third LP. For real.

  • these guys were sick back in the day. think i will play some shit right now.
