The Vault: Simian Monkeys Around

simiancover.jpgBefore they teamed up to form the blog-beloved remix outfit Simian Mobile Disco, James Ford and James Shaw were members of SImian, a short-lived British electronic-pop-psych group that managed two albums on Astralwerks before breaking up in 2005. We Are Your Friends, the band's last effort, is fairly hit-and-miss, but it yielded two notable tracks: "LA Breeze" (which was eventually discovered by Madison Avenue) and the joyous, bursting-at-the-seams "When I Go":

  • Loves me some Simian.

But I think you missed the boat by including "When I Go" instead of "Helpless" or "In Between," which are two superior tracks from that record IMO.

But yeah, "La Breeze" is a given. Here's a tip from me to you: find a friend with a really thoom-y car (lots of sub-bass delicousness) and listen to "La Breeze" as loud as you dare.

    Trust me.

  • Both Simian albums are fantastic. 'Chemistry is What We Are' is a bit slower than 'We Are Your Friends' but just as wispy and frenetic.

I'm surprised though that the Mobile Disco project's first hit was a remix of the title track from 'We Are Your Friends' which was rockin as is. Why didn't they start with something new.

At least they made Kanye angry.

  • I'm not entirely sure that a minute and thirty second commercial for Peugeot was really dreamed up on Madison Ave.

A new weekly post for Nothing But Green Lights. Which is, if you hadn’t already realised, solely dedicated to British music. This post is dedicated to tunes. A round up of the best British music that people are talking about on blogs and podcasts around the world.
