My Chemical Romance: Perhaps You Have Strong Opinions About Them?

mcr.jpgA few weeks ago, we posted a fairly low-quality MP3 of the new My Chemical Romance single, "Welcome To The Black Parade," and just sorta let it hang there. It was early on in the game, and we weren't bothering ourselves with value-added elements like "context" or "opinion." And frankly, we think that was more than a little bit confusing.

So let's be clear on one thing: For all our suspicions about MCR in the past—that they were too whiney, that they were emotive, that they needed to stop reading weird manga collections and go outside and get some air—we love this song. In fact, when pressed, we'll admit that even though we wrote the band off a few years ago, a lot of the songs on Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge turned out to be amazing. "Parade" may be the best thing they've ever done, and if you want to laugh at that, fine—but we're hoping that this is just the beginning of a whole year of MCR flip-flopping.

That said, their videos are still fucking annoying.

  • i also rally love this song, though on the subway friday night i realized - to my horror- that it's essentially "come sail away". soft piano opening that references childhood? check. big chugging rock middle part? check. refrain that includes the words "Carry on?" check. mantra-like steady building conclusion? check. their Kilroy is just a few albums away, i fear.

  • Ha! I look forward to the Hal Sparks-Gerard Way Celebrity Duets team-up.

  • Yeah, this song is pretty amazing, especially coming from a bunch of barely post-pubescent emo kids.

They may take themselves way too seriously, but this album is shaping up to be pretty damn good.

The videos aren't all bad, though. Granted, the video for this song sucks pretty hard, but the video for "I'm No Okay" was pretty good, and the one for "Ghost of You" was more than pretty good. I mean, at least they're not just 3 minutes of the band looking sad in some broken down building (see also: Hawthorne Heights, From First To Last, etc)

  • Really, y'all?

I think it sounds like the emo version of "Sam's Town" by The Killers.

  • it's so big and bloated and stupid and wonderful

  • No laughing here. Just a little annoyed with all the love that MCR gets. I guess i'm a bit bitter towards their success. And having read all the laudatory commentary about the band from suspect sources before all this year no doubt lead me to dislike the band, and hence the music, before I had even heard it.

Thats so juvenile and obnoxious isn't it? (shrug)

  • And people wonder why I love the Smashing Pumpkins still.

  • perhaps this is just the metal-loving part of me speaking, but i want nothing more than to beat on these kids until shit runs down their pantlegs.

  • First reaction: oh, come ON.

    Second and persistent reaction: meh.

  • Mash up opprotunity. Whoever can make a good mix of this and Come Sail Away gets something. I think it would work well enough.

Tomo oregato, Mr. Roboto! Kilroy would be sweet though. Closer to I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love.

    I could live with that.

  • Whoever can make the best mash up between this and Come Sail Away should get a free puppy.

  • Fags.

  • i can understand giving props to the new album, especially if they have evolved their sound, but calling Three Cheers amazing? I didnt know this blog was edited by junior-high students.
