Kim Deal To Pixies Fans: Tough Shit

deathtothepixies.gifPoor Kim's not had an easy time of it, forever demonized by fans (and sometimes even the band members) for everything that ever went wrong with the Pixies, despite the fact that Frank "Alien Control Freak" Black doesn't exactly seem like a peach to share a van with. And yet she may be the only one with the balls to stand up to the band's fanboys:

[Black] told The Gothamist that bassist Kim Deal was against a new album, saying: "While I may have tried to convince her otherwise, maybe she's got a point... She doesn't need a new Pixies record, so maybe there doesn't need to be one."

And I agree. Because even more than preserving the Pixies legacy, what the world actually needs is another Breeders record. A man can only play Pod and the rest but so many times.

  • Damn straight. It was nice to see the reunion and all, but about a year before that I caught the Breeders at a small club show around here that was a one-off before a South American tour and god-DAMN was that a show and a half. More please etc.

  • Come to think of it, Title TK wasn't half bad.

  • Pixies have sort of earned the right to not have to work anymore.

  • She's more man than any fanboy will ever be, and more woman than he'll ever get.

  • At a certain point the whole "Sellout Tour" stopped feeling like irony. Pretty much right after Coachella. And really, a whole album of Bam Thwok? Pass. I'll wait for the oft promised new Breeders album.

  • I'm strangely ambivalent towards another album by my favoritest band ever.

I'd like to hear what they'd do now. Bam Thwok was a cute little song done for a children's movie (one of the Shrek sequels), so it's hard to consider it more than b-side material. The Warrren Zevon cover they did for that tribute album was pretty awesome.

I think an album would tend more towards the Zevon cover than Bam Thwok.

But on the other hand, I've got 4.5 (Come on Pilgrim is too short to count for a full album!) perfect Pixies records, plus some of the strongest b-sides recorded by anyone ever. I can live with those, y'know?

It is, of course, impossible to turn down another Breeders record.

  • MORE BREEDERS WILL MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE. PLZ K THX KIM DEAL

  • Well, I've got 2.5 perfect Pixies albums. After Doolittle, Frank's ego got too big, Kim's vocals were pushed aside, and they became boring.

  • Title TK is a great Breeders album. Pod is a'ight. The finest and creepiest is the Safari EP.

  • Amen Kim, heaven forbid the Pixies turn into the fucking Eagles or something.

  • Pod is one of the best albums ever. It's one of those perfect albums where all the songs sound the same so you can put it on repeat and listen for days.

My only pick with the album is it's produced at really low volume so you gotta crank that sh*t up. Not that that's a bad thing....but...you know what I'm talking about.

  • Did ya'll watch the Pixies reunion doc? Kim and Kelly Deal were going all Grey Gardens up in there, and David Lovering was nuts, too. It was sorta sad. Also, she was playing and singing terribly. I think they are fine without a new record. Frank Black already made two other Pixies records: Frank Black and Teenager of the Year. Hell, Trompe Le Monde was pretty much a Frank solo record.

  • @Maulleigh: I am so with you on the perfectness of Pod! It's an album I can listen to again and again and never get sick of it. But yeah, it totally needed to be mastered at a higher volume. But I love Steve Albini's minimalist production on it.

I'd love a new Breeders album 100x more than a new Pixies effort. They don't seem to have it in them to do something great right now so why bother?
