Sorry to make you squint, but it was the only way we could fit in this screenshot of the top ten "Most Active Torrents" as listed this week on OiNK. And just what is OiNK, you ask? It's an invite-only torrent-directory site that's especially popular with indie-music fans, and it's often the first place to find a just-leaked album or single (note that the Nine Inch Nails, Bright Eyes and Feist records haven't been released yet). We'll have more on OiNK in the upcoming weeks, but for now, we invite you to chew over this ranking, which provides a snapshot at what files are being traded by web-savvy music nerds. All jokes aside, they really do love their Arcade Fire, don't they?

with all due respect, it'd be pretty cool if you actually didn't bring attention to Oink. it's sorta one of those 'if you know, you know' things... and for those of us who 'know' it's probably the best thing that ever has been or ever will be on the internet. so, um, don't ruin it?
Agreed. What's the point? Even if Oink sought publicity (or benefitted from it), you're talking about of a niche userbase.
Oh c'mon, everyone who knows about filesharing knows about OiNK now. It's not a well-kept secret by any means.
The first rule of Oink is you don't talk about Oink!
The second rule of Oink is you don't talk about Oink!
The third rule of Oink is no transcodes!
Seriously, if you think that people who would have it in for this kind of thing don't already know about OiNK, your bubble must be a comfortable place.
Also, rule #3 eclipsed rules #1 & #2 a long time ago.
please don't start doing this every week. It's really a disservice to everyone who uses the site. It may be "known" by the RIAA, butno one wants to have the illegal stuff shoved in their faces.
Oh man. It's just like Napster in 2000... So long, Oink, it's been nice to know ye.
Pssst, there's oink invites here: http://www.ilxor.com:8080/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServ...
Those are two different encodes of the album, some people prefer different qualities than others.
i actually hadn't heard of oink, but these torrents are just as available other places like t******spy and p********bay.
The thing about bittorrent is it's pretty much impossible to stop. We all know there's no centralized server, that's kind of old news.
But it's not just that- the only way to really bust people is for the RIAA to hop on the torrent and check the IPs of others using it. But that only works one torrent at a time. The best they're going to do is bust someone for stealing a 20CD "catalog"
point being, there's no busting someone for every file they have ever downloaded, unless you send the FBI to their house to seize their c:\ drive. Tiny little busts for one torrent aren't even worth the effort.
Well perhaps they won't bust each individual user, but with these Internet speakeasies, I find the philosophy is you don't want to draw attention to the sites lest they be shut down. It's kind of a buzzkill to wake up and find a favorite site has been driven out of existence. Or so I hear.
i luvs ya idolator - but you made more enemies close to home than friends youll never know :

Also:
A cute avatar is a must so you don't break the mood of all those indie & emo, web-savy, nerds.
Ooo, our secret club is gonna be sooo mad at you guys.
It's the internet, people. You think anyone who cares isn't already aware of this crap? News groups, private torrent sites, whatever. There are footprints all over the web. I know the RIAA are hateful bastards and all, and that artists have to adapt or flounder. But anyone who thinks that taking part in the wholesale distribution of entire albums/catalogs is anything other than legally or morally dubious is fooling himself.
I love Idolator, and I'm sure the RIAA knows about OiNK already, but I agree with most of the commenters here: it's not a good idea to give the site this type of publicity.
I don't think the light of Idolatrous publicity will lead to huge numbers of people who didn't know about OiNK becoming little piggies themselves as, AFAIK, OiNK is hard to join and more than happy to exclude anyone who doesn't jump through their hoops (that OiNK invites thread posted above by Jon Williams is hilarious). And I don't see why it's a bad thing to discuss the mass downloading of unpaid-for music as it's definitely a Major Issue of Today. And as for the people who are feeling all protective of OiNK and its ability to get them free music: entitled much?
I second hrefna's emotion. Guys, you have some nerve to complain about your "right" to illegally download music being possibly infringed upon by a semi-obscure (sorry Idolator!) music blog posting a link to a torrent website that is already widely known and readily accessible to anyone with an Internet connection and a basic understanding of where to find invites. Or as Gob would say,
"COME ON!"
i wish i could become a member in such a privileged club. boy i can only imagine how much better my life would be getting my torrents a day or two earlier....
none of those top albums surprises me one bit.
and I didn't know about oink, but I also don't know how to use torrents, so, yeah.
where did my account go... well i was inactive for a long duration of time and my account was closed but due to my reasons for being offline was a personal matter that couldnt be forseen then i couldnt park my account.
its a good site but i found when it switched to invite only there was still a lot of hit and runners on there which made uploading files a little difficult , especially if u were like me n from the uk and had low upload rates.
seems like they come a long way since then as theres so much fuss about there invite only policy lol
im glad they do a no ratio week but other torrent sites have a free ratio booster week maybe twice monthly so i hope oinks will keep up with the way things are going.
i hoping one day i will find someone who will be kind enough to re invite me to the community as i do miss it.
i like my music and the various types of music found here are 2nd to none.
WAY TO FUCKING GO, BRIAN.
