Hey look, Jay-Z is on the cover of the upcoming issue of Blender, which is no great surprise as Jay-Z has been and will be on the cover of everything for the foreseeable future. But what's this other item being teased on the front cover? Some kind of... list? Some kind of indie rock list?
"The 100 Greatest Indie-Rock Albums Ever"? Hot damn! Are your WordPress accounts ready to rumble? Not being the type of people who wait for Christmas morning to dig into our plum pudding, we went looking for the list online, and found this, a Russian LiveJournal that claims (from what our limited Babelfish skills can tell) to have it. But this can't really be it, with De La Soul at No. 14 and the Shaggs at No. 100, can it? This is clearly some sort of Russian disinformation. Sadly, whatever the final tally, we're informed the list was not compiled by "The Hills' Superhot Supervillain" Heidi Montag. But we can dream.
UPDATE: It's real.

Hey, they do get some level of believability with Arcade Fire in the top 10, right? (Then again, since when is "Kerplunk" an indie album?)
not to start intercommentsection beef, the stereogum commenter who claimed that the young marble giants don't deserve to be on the list and that my morning jacket does is currently topping my list of 'people who need to be strapped down and force-fed taste' today.
any list of "indie rock" that doesn't have Dance With Carl Perkins (Sun) or Here are the Sonics (Etiquette) on it is suspect.
I used up my venom for this thing on Stereogum 10 minutes ago. I'm mostly just bummed that at least a few 17 year olds will end up taking this clusterfuck as a formative influence on their musical exploration. However, they are reading Blender in the first place, so maybe not.
Simon LeBon has a man-crush? No way.
Boring and predictable. However, I still contend Alien Lanes destroys Bee Thousand any day of the week.
Maura: I liked how Young Marble Giants were lumped in with Art Brut, Green Day and Rilo Kiley. One of these things is not like the other, folks.
#23 - Yakov Smirnov?
stereogum is indie rock.
it took this long for someone to come up with the "Radiohead: Nothing But 'Net" headline, huh?
Russians on LiveJournal is the reason why I am afraid of LiveJournal.
@rad_matter: *that's* the reason???
i mean ... there's so much more
this list=made for the express purpose of stirring up shit in the blogosphere. indie rock fans are, outside of hip-hop heads, probably the people most obsessed with the discussion of what is "canon" and what is not. the only list that could probably allow more hits on their website was a list of the 100 most overrated indie rock albums of all time, though i get the feeling at least 80% of the comments about the list will be about what the overrated stuff is on the list.
@walkmasterflex: half that shit isn't even indie rock tho.
I was happy to see both Slint and Archers of Loaf though. And Superchunk. SOUTH REPRESENT!
@maura: It's STEREOGUM...really, expect the worst.
Blender poops out yet another list and this is news? No less absurd than what they do any other month.
Has anyone else noticed that Hova has 'The Devil' attached to his head?
@Captain Wrong: No, Cap'n, this list is SPECIAL! Red Caps Lock of Enthusiasm!
