So Barry Obama's big benefit shindig coming up next week in California features musical endorsements from Ne-Yo (yay!), the Goo Goo Dolls (uh), Nicole Scherzinger (ack), and will.i.am (dear lord no). Meanwhile, Hilary Clinton has recently ditched Celine Dion's "You And I" (holy shit) as her campaign song in favor of Big Head Todd And The Monsters' "Blue Sky" (could be worse, right?). Forgetting their opinions about, like, stuff salient to running a country, this does not particularly fill us with hope for the future. (Even the Republicans are showing better taste this time out; for instance, did you know Mitt Romney's campaign tune is "I Get Around"*?) So we put it to you, a year or so early, to decide who you would vote for based solely on these less than stellar musical track records.

He's dreamy...
Barry should go with "Bad Bad Leroy Brown."
edwards just got the crucial dethklok endorsement. amy winehouse put her support behind obama saying that "he has some really good coke, innit."
Yeah, but which candidate got shout-outs on Ghostface Killah and Juelz Santana tracks in 2007? (Hint: Not Hillary)
Hillary, because I imagine that once a week or so she and Bill still put on the Rumours LP and go at it like monkeys.
Pow-pow-pow-pow, p-p-pow!
I think Chocolate Rain could go either way with his endorsement.
Of course, Barry's got a fundraising concert at the Riviera this week:
[donate.barackobama.com]
Jeff Tweedy (of course)
Stephan Jenkins (who said the 90s were dead?)
Jill Sobule (ditto)
Cool Kids / Canasta / Changes
Obama for President
[Democratic; 2008]
Rating: 7.4
@Hatch: fred thompson?
I will only vote for the candidate who arranges for the reunion of Trouble Funk. And I'm talking original members, not punk-ass shit involving trading off their brand in their old age.
I'm waiting to see who Marylin Manson endorses.
Obama or Clinton, you say? Of the two I'd choose Kucinich.
@Harvey Birdman: Or "Chocolate Reign," rather?
They both break my achey-brakey heart. Whoever gets the Anal Cunts endorsement has my vote.
@deficitizen: the "obama looks adopted" track might count.
Ow. I just got a migraine from the phrase "Big Head Todd and the Monsters."
What's wrong with the Goo Goo Dolls? They have some pretty good songs and albums.
Third Eye Blind are among the Top Friends on Obama's MySpace page.
Hillary's MySpace notes that her last music purchase was Carly Simon's "Into White".
Just like in a real presidential election, everybody loses.
Ow, we want the funk
Give up the funk
Ow, we need the funk
We gotta have that funk
Barry, since HRC is as MOR as it gets. Nobody is insulted at the top of the bell curve.
anyone who uses any gary glitter song as their campaign theme song gets my vote, though unfortunately the way things have been it's probably going to be a republican.
I really like Big Head Todd. I'm sorry that their song is being used by that frosty woman who is running for Supreme Dictator for Life of the United States.
Obama's song should be "Paint It Black" by the Stones.
Hillary's should be "Queen Bitch" by Bowie.
Mittens' should be "Gardening At Night" by R.E.M.
Rudy's should be "Asshole" by Denis Leary.
Tom Tancredo's should be "Loving the Alien," also by Bowie.
Those would be much better songs.
I bet they're all NWA fans at heart. "**** the Police." At least one politician has said something akin to that in the history of the world.
Both figuratively and literally...
Not to jump the gun, but when Hilary selects O as her VP, I suggest: "Come Together" (for the imagery) and of course, "Ebony and Ivory"
@loquaciousmusic: Nice.
@Hatch: Barry was also namechecked on Common's last album. Although, given Common's increasingly large Starbucks demographic, I'm not sure how much that helps.
When they get together, it'll be "The Big Payback."
Get down wit cher funky stuff!
Any metalheadz running? Kirk Hammett of Metallica, btw, is good for a thousand a year to the DNC since 2004. Let's hear "Blackened" out on the trail sometime, or "Disposable Heroes" or "One". [www.newsmeat.com]
"George Bush has blood on his hands." Kirk. [www.roadrunnerrecords.com]

@thefrontpage: ...you just said albums. Heh.
@KinetiQ: Exactly. There's an excellent chance he actually owns records from this decade.
Since I'm in one of the bands playing Obama's Chicago benefit show, I'm going to have to side with him here.
I won't decide until I hear who Fergie, apl.de.ap, and Taboo endorse. Also, the one in Eden's Crush who was on the teevee with Ryan Seacrest [that would be Rosanna Tavarez].
@jaymc: omg can u pass him my # and tell him to holla
Lou Bega has endorsed Kuchinich.
Every time I read stories like this, I think to myself, how is it anyone who presents themselves as a campaign consultant manages to collect a fucking check?
How hard is it to figure out that whomever the Dem nominee is the only choice for music is Merle Haggard? How more perfect could you get? And that took me eight seconds. That will be $100K, DNC.
@jessdolator: Yeah, I'll slip it to him when we're smoking cigars in the hot tub at the after-party.
@jaymc: fka Anonymous will outbid you for that job.
The Cool Kids are playing an Obama fundraiser? Those guys twist and press knobs just to make your head nod!
Cool Kids for Obama? That's hot shit right there.
This particular vote (Obama v. Hills; primary) is actually a whole lot less than a year away.
i'm goging to venture a guess that Romney isn't using the Tupac version of "I Get Around", right?
[crickets chirping]
i can't vote for either of those: i have problems w/ both candidates and i pretty much don't like any of that music. this might be my first post on this site, i love this site but everyone is so damn clever i'm afraid i will be found out to be a fraud. now i did go to an edwards fundraiser a while ago at temple in san francisco, the music was (before he got there) "I Feel Good (I Got You)" - James Brown and at the end when he left "Running Down a Dream" (I think is title by Tom Petty. Now you're talking. Tigerpop I agree w/ you wholeheartedly re Big Head Todd and I love the comment re Hilary and Bill and Rumours. You all are killin' me!
Big Head Todd & The Monsters are really good live. "Sister Sweetly" was a great 90's album. And people forget how good the Goos used to be. "Hold Me Up" and "Superstar Carwash" are really solid.
i don't know why no one's ever used something off of like screamadelica or something.
if elections were decided by popular music taste i'd just become a terrorist.
For Hillary, it just has to be The Bitch is Back! Her supporters (including me) would love it, and it would drive the Republicans absolutely bugfuck!
For Senator Obama, maybe Quincy Jones' The Dude. It's cool and eloquent, just like him.
It has to be said, though- Given the tunes on display during their campaigns, it's lucky they're both first class politicians and worthy candidates, because neither of them would win a high school student council election with their taste in music.
I must abstain. America will not mature as a country until a serious candidate picks the Minutemen's "This Ain't No Picnic" as their theme or a recreational listening choice.
Although I would also vote for a candidate based solely on their choice of music, recreational or theme, if it was Sockeye's "Steve Albini Fucked Pacman."
Greatest political song ever written.
