Track Marks: How YACHT Became This Week's Biggest Artist In The World

Welcome to another edition of Track Marks, in which your Idolators perform an autopsy on the latest band burning up the MP3-blogger charts.

Artist: YACHT
Hometown: Portland, Ore.
Album: I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real, out May 8
First blog mention: A bit of May 2005 show promotion from a friend on The Microphones' Livejournal group.
The Build-Up: The beats that YACHT (a.k.a. Jona Bechtolt) supplied for The Blow's lovely Paper Televison got a lot of positive buzz around the time of that record's release; in November, a one-hour set that he curated for French National Radio received blog love from Your Daily Awesome, Slutty Fringe, and Gorilla Vs. Bear, among others.
The Dam-Break: "See A Penny (Pick It Up)" was released to the blogs this week, and Gorilla Vs. Bear got lucky with it on March 23; other heavy hitters in the music-blog world, like largehearted boy, *SIXEYES, extrawack!, Stereogum, and GIMME TINNITUS, followed.
Odds of Backlash: 3-1. The Fader has threatened "Akon-level posting" about him in the near future, so some sort of YACHT-lash is inevitable.
Are They Worthy?: We loved the beats this dude put down for the Blow. But are we the only people who think that "Penny" is really a tweaked-out version of the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" that has a little bit of The Knife's "Heartbeats" mixed in for good measure?
