About a year ago the song "Pancake America" by now-defunct Danish pop band Tiger Tunes came into my life and has refused to loosen its grip on my mp3 player ever since. This Fluxblog post effectively describes the appeal of the bizarre mescaline/pancake narrative, which, in combination with the trippy synth beats and peculiar soundbites creates a maniacal, irresistible whimsy. But underneath all the aggressive quirk, it's suprisingly poignant: "I need you for the comfort and sex/I'll straighten it all out and make you some flapjacks," perhaps one of the most genuine sentiments I've come across in a song. Since there was shockingly no video (officially or unofficial) for this intensely evocative song, I asked my film school friend Adena Rice to put something together:
Because (full disclosure alert) I'm good friends with nearly everyone involved in the making of this video, I'll refrain from attempting an objective assessment. I think it's pretty safe to say that the video is a success, though some have lamented the absence of a literally represented mescaline trip.
