Spoon's first song on this weekend's Saturday Night Live, "The Underdog," was torpedoed a bit by the Chronic Problem Bands Have On TV—namely, that the sound engineers couldn't figure out how to mix the horn-augmented band so that it sounded good to the viewers at home, and not just the people in the studio—but Britt Daniel and company recovered nicely on the crunchy "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb." If only they'd performed a third song; then the world could have been spared that superindulgent, straight-outta-college-comedy-night sketch where Andy Samberg borked it up as the Swedish Chef. (Dude, when you're stealing your jokes from jokey versions of Google, it's time to step back and re-evaluate. Just saying.)

Oh, THIS is what everyone was freaking out about. I can't believe I missed it. Srsly.
Weird.
The bigger question is: what went wrong with Andy Samberg? Dude used to be funny. At least he's still easy on the eyes.
@MTS: Um, the siren song of filthy lucre?
@therichgirlsareweeping: Sigh, you are right, as always.
@MTS: That being said, I certainly don't mind people "selling out" and all to acquire the filthy lucre and lead better lives, etc. -- but dreck like Hot Rod is totally unconscionable. More "Dick in a Box," Samberg!
Swedish Chef was kinda lame, but Seth Rogen did an admirable Rowlf, a character we just don't get enough of since Jim Henson's passing. And it was nice to see cast members dressed as the Electric Mayhem.
I like how SNL has gotten back to showcasing lesser known artists. Sure, Spoon isn't that unknown, but I'd say at least 90% of the people I know haven't heard of them. For awhile, SNL had the flavor of the month hip hop artist on every week. But having bands like Spoon on is great. They deserve the exposure, hopefully this convinces some people to check them out.
Spoon debuted at #10 on the Billboard charts. Not totally lesser-known.
I'm not that familiar with Spoon. I thought there was a Billy Joel vibe in their first perormance. Am I the only one? Also, if this was such a rotten showing, does that mean they usually don't sound like Billy Joel?
Really? The sound on this is horrible. Did someone forgot to plug in their guitars? You can see Britt's look, halfway through, where he knows this performance is failing. I love you Spoon, but SNL does not.
The best part of that sketch was Bill Hader as Animal. Hader's a comic genius. Samberg? Not so much.
