Writing about Hostel 2 recently, Rich Juzwiak raised the old question about the infamous I Spit On Your Grave: "Is this director Meir Zarchi's parable for women's struggles and the strength needed to overcome them, or is it a 20-minute porno wrapped in 80 minutes of bullshit?" Which bring us to Simian Mobile Disco's most recent video for "Hustler," which raises a similar question on a much-smaller scale:
Does the "Hustler" video, as the NME and so many others seem to believe, "send up glamour girl culture"? Or is it just an excuse to have a bunch of women dressed like American Apparel models debase themselves by writhing around in their own filth for four minutes? Answer: probably the latter, unless you think multi-colored vomit and shiny bikinis are actually an effective critique of hypersexualized culture. But who knew vintage low-budget torture porn and indie-dance could have so much in common?

I don't know what's worse: the "windowlicker" visual/sound-alike mannerisms, or the gentle copping of Paul McCarthy (he of the Santa suit, sausages, and knives). Either way, we all lose!

Maybe the ultimate point was just to be frightening as shit, in which case I think they've done their job quite well.
It seems ridiculous to criticize this for going slightly too far, but nevertheless, without the vomiting and eating of money and Richard D. James masks, this could've been pretty good. I mean, why be hatin? Why not actually revel in hot girls rolling around in Twinkies?
