Videodrone: Michael Bolton And Kenny G Send Their Love Down A Well

In honor of tonight's U2-Green Day charity mash-up, we present the video for "Voices That Care," a morale-boosting all-star sing-along that aired on Fox in 1991 (it was likely sandwiched somewhere between Cops and The New Adventures Of Beans Baxter). Written by legendary wordsmith David Foster Wallace, "Voices" features a truly spectacular line-up: Will Smith, Luther Vandross and Peter Cetera all make appearances, as does Fred Savage. But the best part, as tinyluckygenius points out, is when Mark Knopfler performs a guitar solo while nonchalantly sitting in a chair, looking as though he'd rather be cashing another Brothers In Arms royalty check.

  • Knopfler seems like he could solo while making coffee or driving... just that easy.

  • When you get tired of that, check out the "Give Peace a Chance" video from Gulf War I.

  • Thanks, Mo! for posting the "Give Peace a Chance" clip. I was gonna say that one needed to see both that and "Voices That Care" to appreciate the absurdity of the 1991 bleeding-heart-benefit scene.

In my college music magazine back then, my fellow lefty writers and I posted lists of everyone who took part in the two records to figure out who was on the "good" side ("Peace") and the "bad," pro-war side ("Voices"). Clearly we were naïve, because watching 15 years later, I see in the "Voices" lineup plenty of notably liberal Hollywood types.

Oh yeah, the only celebrity to cover all his bases and take part in both records? M.C. Hammer.
