"MTV Networks struck a deal with streaming video entertainment site Metacafe for a 'Virtual Worlds Virtual Music Video Contest.' Contestants will have access to audio tracks from various emerging artists as well as video clips and online editing tools to create their own music video from within one of MTV's seven virtual world environments." Suggestion: Anyone who can figure out how to recreate the winning clip from the "Make your own 'True Blue' video" contest should win by default. Reality: Anyone who actually enters this contest probably will win by default. [Billboard.biz]

  • OMG, thank you for digging up that Madge ephemera. I remember that whole contest ('86 was, like, my peak MTV-watching year), including the day they played dozens of submissions back-to-back-to-back; it was like an ocean of delightful pop cheese.

I remembered thinking at the time that the winning clip looked too professional (my teen jealousy/budding auteur talking). Now it just looks charmingly dated and maybe even Fisher-Price in terms of the video quality.

I also have spent all of this year thinking Gwen Stefani's "The Sweet Escape" is basically a massive "True Blue" homage. Gwen's transformation into the post-millenial coke-whore Madonna is complete.
