There was a lot of noise made about some internet deal for Beatles downloads along with the "remastered" discs around the time Apple v. Apple was settled. Pretty ironic that "remastered" versions will be used to create crappy mp3s...oh well at least they didn't make a deal with Microsoft...must have been the brown Zune that did it...

Jupiter8

Yeah, to follow on Rabi's comment, I can't remember if this was ever confirmed or not, but I would suspect that the Apple Corp. v. Apple Comp. lawsuit settlement has some relevance on any licensing deal between the band and the digital storefront.

j clicky clicky

Reading this earlier this morning and then comparing it with HITS' prediction of Thanksgiving-week sales, my immediate theory was that Apple Corps/Neil Aspinall were caving, in part, because sales of Love are so lackluster.

The Beatles' 1 debuted to 500K in first-week sales in 2000 and went on to sell about 1.2 million the week of Christmas that year, which (I think) is still the single-week record for a greatest-hits album. Six years later, Love - relying entirely on the physical-goods market, which is down by about one-fifth since 2000 - is going to debut to only 225K, maybe 250K if they got lucky. In other words, less than half the debut week of 1 six years ago. (Which is too bad, BTW, 'cuz Love turns out to be surprisingly good.)

Anyway, picture Apple announcing a Fabs-branded iPod next week and the catalog appearing on iTunes: all the records, especially Love, would shoot up the charts, just in time for another Christmas-week sales record. It'd be a bonanza for all concerned.

Chris Molanphy
