The guitar playing sounds almost too precise to be Neil Young, but it has that infamous warbly tone. Trying to find out if he was using the Gretch 6129 hollowbody electric then, which is what he used in Buffalo Springfield.

RedMetal

I agree with your assessment of Tear Drop City... odd that Papa Nes would even cut such an obvious reimagineering of Last Train... but I have to disagree with your take on You and I. Neil Young's guitar alone is not enough to save this song from itself. The real lost gem of Instant Replay is I Won't Be the Same Without Her. A(nother) Goffin/King beauty with Nesmith adding his trademark twang. And I agree with Alicia... it's worth it to pick up Nesmith's post-Monkees First National Band releases. They're even on iTunes now.

themiserabilist

You guys should look into some of Mike Nesmith's solo stuff. Especially "Joanne" and "Calico Girlfriend."

Alicia

This song was fabulous. I also like the chic 60's way this was mixed. The drums and bass are panned to the left with all the guitars in the right.

Stereolab does it a lot as well. It must have been a nightmare for the vinyl cutters as directional bass can cause the cutting needle (or the playback one for that matter) to try and split away from itself.

noamjamski
