No they weren't Soundgarden at their peak, but I personally thought the first album was the best thing Cornell did since "Badmotorfinger". It was great to hear "Show Me How To Live" and "Shadow On The Sun" stuck between all the garbage that the radio conglams have been spewing out the last few years.

I don't have details, but man did you hear how many months it took Cornell's camp and the Rage camp to negotiate the launch of the band 3-4 years ago? No one wanted to budge on anything royalties-wise, Cornell reportedly extracted a promise from Morello that they wouldn't constantly be recording political shit, and the members' two respective labels had to agree to share the band - one album on Sony, one album on Universal. My guess is they put up with the compromises for the first two records because they sold like hotcakes, but then the third record stiffed and Cornell probably wondered why he was bothering.
