Is it true that Pushead has designed some ZZ Top merch? If it is, I'd like to see it.

h3athrow

@drjimmy11: It's actually a really good book--even if you're not a fan of Semisonic. He writes about going from being a two- or three-hit wonder in the mid-'90s to being essentially forgotten about by the label, with a lot of insight as to how the labels were changing at the turn of the century.

Considering that most people only hear about the bands that make it to the big time-or the groups that burn out too soon-it's a really interesting look at mid-level success.

Respect due!

story told by Semisonic's drummer in his book So You Wanna Be a Rock n' Roll Star

So what, the guy from Semisonic went and interviewed a bunch of people who had been rock stars to find out what it was like, then wrote a book about it?

And, the fact that would choose a song titled "Closing Time" to close the show tells us just about all we need to know about the level of imagination involved in the mainstream music industry.

drjimmy11

....."Tush" is deceptively simple-sounding. It's in G, like a lot of classic ZZ-Top. Unless you have huge hands, there are some serious reaches in there, played the way Gibbons does it, particularly with the Eb-9 to D9 slide. Gibbons plays the root with his thumb on that. I've been hearing bar bands mutilate this song for 30 years! Nice to know that Nickleback was particularly bad at it...

AcidReign

I know I do a lot of pimping for Billboard the magazine 'round these parts, but I agree: the show has always been shite. They rarely get decent performers, and the winners are really unsuspenseful (or, in the case of 2006's Hot 100 Single of the Year winner, Daniel Powter, totally embarrassing).

This is really inside-baseball, but: Honestly, the show is one of the last vestiges of the late, unlamented Timothy White era of Billboard. The show - who got to go, who got to write/produce it - was a total power trip for Timmy's anointed ones and various West Coast staffers. Now that most of the Timmy-favored people have hit the road, there's gotta be very little enthusiasm for keeping it going.

The Billboard Music Awards story told by Semisonic's drummer in his book So You Wanna Be a Rock n' Roll Star - about playing "Closing Time" in the closing moments of the 1998 show, and having the plug to their amps pulled the instant the show went off live TV - told me everything I needed to know about what an empty spectacle it is. Even the Grammys wouldn't be that lame.

Chris Molanphy
