At some point, I become absolutely sick of working on one song, and it suffers after that if I keep pounding it. I wonder how many of these long development times include periods of shelving the song for a while? Coming back to an idea later is often best.

A lot of times, getting stuff down to tape while it's still raw and full of energy is the way to go!

I remember, in days of yore, reading about Trent Reznor shit-talking Kurt Cobain for not taking 2 years to write a song and thinking "huh?"

As another lit major and half-assed poet I understand both the usefulness of revision and the danger of always thinking of everything as a rough draft. There's a certain amount of discipline involved in making yourself getting it right on first try.

i heard irv gotti once brag on MTV as to how ashanti consistently bangs out songs in like 5 minutes. you don't say. what ever happened to revisions? maybe i'm biased as a lit major and half ass poet but damn i wish more artists workshopped their songs or at least edited them which isn't to say brilliance doesn't strike quickly, just not often.
