Well all those "dude" shows on MTV are definitely not much more than vehicles for the advertising. Young boys are squirrelly and hard to pin down, so to get them to watch they gotta keep lowering the bar. From Beavis & Butthead, to Jackass and it's spin-offs, to Punk'd and Yo Momma, they'll do whatever it takes to keep the teenage boys stupid (and watching).

Silverfuture

I believe the strategy MTV and it's parents are implementing is a lot like the New Coke myth, you know, make it suck then bring back the original all shiny and cool and watch them lap it up...

Or else all that coke in the hey-day has finally taken it's toll. But what do I know? I only watch Discovery channel.

Tenno

Facebook has a polls feature now - advertisers can target their polls by age demographic, geography, sex, even by general interests listed in a profile.

This morning I was asked what I think of MTV.

1) Pretty good, but I don't have time to watch
2) The shows are worse and worse
3) I love it!

Number 2) got approx. 76% of the responses, 1) about 14%.

binaryan

I read somewhere that Tivo's will explode if they are instructed to record programing on (un)MTV.

bedofnails

I wonder how these new metrics account for TiVo? I mean, I know Nielsen's just starting to measure DVR viewership, so it's probably too early, but: when do people hit the 30-second skip button? If they fast-forward, what ad will make them slow back down? (I'm an Apple tool, so anything with an iPhone in it will make me throttle down.) I mean, as long as they're going to treat teens as lab rats, let's really wire 'em up...

Chris Molanphy
