rubin comes off great in that piece; its his Epic partner barnett who represents every reason the industry is all but dead. majors like epic are holding on to 20th century strategies . no way will the majors all get along & agree on subscription format. I still buy cds by my favourite old & new acts but im the only 1 I know . there needs to be a subscription service offering every song ever off vinyl, CD & bootlegs . thats worth $5-20 a month . rubin endorses that; barnett says NO . labels rip off bands right & left & the idea that labels want to share in merchandise & concert grosses shows they are still greedy in 2007 as they breath their last gasps

the earl grey

A great recap from Idolator.
Anybody else get the Rick Rubin - Orson Welles vibe? Like, "Citizen Kane" to voice of a Transformer?
Or, if Natalie Dixiechick and the author have us believe there is an apotheosis coming. Rubin wouldn't have to bother saving the industry, considering his Buddha Nature.
Besides, this whole Word-Of-Mouth(tm) marketing strategy is patently deceitful. It stinks of Zune-sponsored frat parties, and the "Anti-Truther" trolls squirling around the web. Mind control, anyone?
Nothing like an aging huckster to try and squeeze every last dollar out of a real, working artist! But lest I forget, where would This Band or That Band be without a guru to guide them along into the A&R slaughterhouse? Starry-eyed groups who seek the approval of someone like Rubin probably deserve to be buried alive with their own ego and cash advances, and really shouldn't be making music in the first place, anyway.

In other words, see you at the swap meet in 2 years, Columbia!

CloudCarrier

Good writeup. The piece mostly made me sad for Rubin, because even as a longtime industry tool his core instincts (old model=dead) are right, and his heart, to some extent, is in the right place. But you're right that he hasn't been out of his hermetically sealed soundroom in years if he thinks label-sanctioned buzz or the subscription model (called "the future" in, like, 2001) are the Way Forward.

Basically, I trust Rick to be a Mo Ostin-like judge of talent and a glorified über-A&R man. I don't trust him to be the post-Steve Jobs.

Chris Molanphy

Maura, another very well-written piece by you about the music industry. I enjoy your daily humor and quips, but these more serious-minded pieces that appear occasionally are equally as good, if not better. You should take over from whiny old Lefsetz and start the Maura Memorandum.

Vince Neilstein

But the best part was when Steve Barnett compared Rubin to Marshall Faulk...!

Also, love Rubin's Jedi Mind Trick mentality: "I felt like I could be a force for good. In the past, I've tried to protect artists from the label, and now my job would also be to protect the label from itself."

Did anyone count how many times paradigm shifts or the like were given empty lip service? OMG, sad.

the rich girls are weeping
