the whole thing is nonsensical, as noted, but the "no pop music from the 90s" thing completely befuddles me... B*witched, Heavenly, Godstar, Tiger Trap, Roxette, Shampoo, All Saints, Venga Boys, none of that was pop? What in hell IS this pop you speak of, Mr. Lester?

dippinkind

This ridiculousness helps illustrate two points about music journalism:

1) the endless need to categorize everything for the sake of easy language. chuck klosterman summed it up best when he said that music genres are just ways for music journalists to make themselves feel important. or something like that.

2) this writer make's the classic mistake of presenting his opinions as fact, i.e. "this music is good" instead of "i don't like this music." in this case he's superimposing his own definition of pop, which includes his tastes, onto the overall definition.

Vince Neilstein

I was all set to disagree with you, because I do believe there exists a style of music that isn't necessarily popular (and never could be) but is, in essence, pop. (Just like I believe punk is a genre of music, not a movement, and it's possible for certain trust-fund brats who were never True Believers to create punk music.)

But that article -- oy. I don't know what that git is prattling on about. Off the Wall is pop, but Thriller isn't? Dude, whatevs...

Chris Molanphy

This is the problem with headlines and deadlines. Sometimes people end up forcing themselves to write things so they look busy. That whole Guardian piece is a result of such efforts. Bravo. Seriously.

loudersoft
