1) the endless need to categorize everything for the sake of easy language. chuck klosterman summed it up best when he said that music genres are just ways for music journalists to make themselves feel important. or something like that.

2) this writer make's the classic mistake of presenting his opinions as fact, i.e. "this music is good" instead of "i don't like this music." in this case he's superimposing his own definition of pop, which includes his tastes, onto the overall definition.

(Just like I believe punk is a genre of music, not a movement, and it's possible for certain trust-fund brats who were never True Believers to create punk music.)

But that article -- oy. I don't know what that git is prattling on about. Off the Wall is pop, but Thriller isn't? Dude, whatevs...
