I'm actually sad that I didn't watch this ... I'd kind of meant to.

Isn't there some sort of direct correlation between the retarded-ness of a band's name, and how good they actually are? This show seems to prove that theory somehow.

the rich girls are weeping

@brasstax: Word, and...

@thieves: Word.

I'm going to break with Maura and say I'm rooting for Franklin Bridge and Muggs. The latter is too ugly to go all the way, but -- while I agree with Maura that the country-rockers stand an excellent chance of taking it thanks to their red-state advantage -- I think Franklin Bridge could really go a long way. They clearly have chops, and if they manage to funk/hip-hop up some of the material thrown at them, the under-20 crowd could be voting for them in droves.

I was saying to my wife while watching this, that the most interesting thing about doing the Idol thing with bands is there's got to be so much fewer contestants. Picture it: each contestant is a gang of people, each requires setup, each requires behind-the-scenes wrangling that no solo performer will require (until s/he becomes a diva). Look at Northmont: they didn't even survive, and they were clearly soaking up a ton of the show's resources even in failure. Just getting three or four or 10 people to show up in the same place, on time, is a chore far harder than getting Blake Lewis to put down the groupie's panties and come rehearse the Ford commercial.

Chris Molanphy

I followed Dicko's advice of closing my eyes (as he did for "Big Toe" or whatever that band with the armless bass player was) while The Muggs were playing and they ended up sounding pretty good. It really doesn't help them, as a RAWK band, that their frontman looks like Trey Anastasio.

I kind of felt bad for the Northmont guys, but then I remembered the world could really benefit from less of that music. Go back and get an IT degree, dudes!

Overall, I think it's a fun show to watch...especially once they have to start genre-bending some of these bands (can't wait to see the stupid Dot Dot Dotters try to do convincing gospel music). And I'd watch Sheila E read recipes for two hours anyway, so it's an added bonus that she'll be talking about music.

brasstax
