Yeah, this was a disappointing read. Having become a more-than-casual Mats fan only about a year ago, I was super excited for this. But it too often falls into the insular "I was there, and I knew from the first note of "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" that I was witnessing an earth-shattering event, and Paul Westerberg spit in my face and I have the kleenex I wiped it off with hermetically sealed in my storage unit," blah blah blah. Walsh is way too indulgent of this kind of prose, from himself and others.

And I would've liked a little more about them as people - not necessarily for shock value, but because I think it's worth examining in the context of band dynamics and makes for a much fuller portrait (a la Dee Dee Ramone in Please Kill Me.)

katieee

Everyone's had it in for the 'Mats since the Titanic. For the last time, that was iceberg, he's Westerberg, dammit!

Tonight somewhere in Williamsburg in a tomcattin' dude's eye twinkles the progeny of the hair-splitting blog critic who'll someday carp similarly about Matos' authorized autobiography of The Hold Steady.

"I sometimes resent the grip that Lifter Puller/Craig Finn has on the hearts of many Triplet Cities residents. This doesn't necessarily stem from any particular dislike of the band; it has more to do with the sentimentality that so-called "Finn-laden" invariably comes doused in."

He was there. So what? His book is laaame . . .

Luke N Atmaguchi

Having read The Other Hollywood, that's a particularly apt comparison. I also remember that PBS special when it first screened! Glad to see someone still has it around. Wasn't Alexander O'Neal also featured in it?

Ned Raggett
